Hi folks,

This is Mark's Dumb Question #4302

"How can I disable collision on only one object in a scene."

A while back I noticed a method in TS7.51 to disable collision for only one specific object in a scene. Unfortunately I was busy looking for something else at that time so I didn't save a scene using that method at the time I saw it, and now I can't remember at all how to do it with trueSpace7.51!:o

Any help would be appreciated, who knows when I may find it again! Hahaha!:p

Thanks,

Select your object.

Add physical attributes.

right click on the physical attribute button. An item will appear in the panel on the (typically) right hand side of truespace, where you have the Library, Panels, and Settings tabs. (Make sure Panels is selected).

You will see an item called PhysObject. To the right of this word, there is a drop down tab. It will probably be set to Default. Click and hold that. Select Constraints.

In that box is a checkbox called Disable Collision. Check that.

You should be good to go then.

LOL

No wonder I couldn't find it again! Hahahaha!!!

Think they could have buried that one any deeper? LOL:confused:

Thanks Froo, that's exactly the ticket I was looking for!

By the way... in telling me this you just made that "trueCuzzi" Virtual Jaccuzzi (that I uploaded here as a freebie the other day) something we can all actually use now in muti-user shared space! LOL!:D

Thanks, that helps me with all kinds of stuff now!

Here's the download link and a render of the "trueCuzzi" this will work with! LOL

I put it in the Public Domain so now you have your own Virtual Jaccuzzi that will actually be usable thanks to Froo here!!!:D

IMPORTANT:

In order for this method to work folks, you will need to do exactly what is described abobe but ALSO after that be sure to click the "Physics Start/Stop" Toggle icon to activate that Collision Disabled Aspect in realtime First Person Navigation. That icon looks like a tire with a blue arrow in it. (You can also activate this via script but be certain to have it deactivate right away for large multi-user online scenes.)

I recommend using the "subdivide faces and triangles" icon first on any simple flat object surfaces where collision is likely due to the fact that more triangles means more accurate physical interactions. This is NOT the same as "Add Subdivision Layers."

Also, hitting that same "Physics Start/Stop" Toggle icon while in any of the large multi-user truePlaces online Meetings is a VERY BAD idea, so please familiarize yourself well with that particular icon and be sure to not accidentally hit it while in meetings... because it is, unfortunately, right next to the icon which we all use for First Person Navigation in those meetings. Hitting that in large meetings bogs down the server instantly and can actually lead to people losing their live connections to that meeting, including yourselves.

Thanks.

is this the only way to stop an avatar colliding with an object? i've got something i want to use for my entry into the imersive comp that i want viewers to be able to walk thru.

No, there is at least one other way that I know of, and that is having a script trigger an object's normals to change orientation when an avatar approaches it. I haven't done that myself yet but I suspect we could create one between here and the 3rd! It looks pretty straightforward to me. We should make one of those anyway to have in our toolsets for other things as well.

If you PM me on it here I'll give you more specific private advice based on your specific need for that scpecific scene, there are often excellent alternatives as well as relatively unprecedented ways of approaching some of these things, and I'd be glad to help you with it if you like.

The method above in this thread can also be triggered by a script I believe, and I'm looking into the feasibility of devising that this week anyway, although others here with more scripting experience could probably do something like that in their sleep.

Want unprecedented? Use Dele's teleport script to teleport your barrier instead of your Avatar, for instance. Crazy stuff like that I can do in my sleep.

PM me on it, I'll help you find a way.
