I've had this for a while now. The material preview in 7.51 only shows a grey sphere. I can not preview materials, it never updates. I been going without it for a w3hile but now I'm kind of annoyed with it. It used to work fine, I don't know what happened. I have tried deleting default.ctx and reinstalling with no luck. Any ideas what could be wrong? |

Your talking about the ME in the stack not changing? Are they DX9 materials or VRay materials? If you click with the eye dropper on the object the ME doesn't update? |

yeah the ME in the stack. Just regular vray shaders, color, transparencey, dispacement, reflection. They don't display in the big material preview or the small live previews. I don't know what happened. I know it used to work. I been going without it, but of course would prefer it work. Eyedropper does not update ME preview.
Edit: hahahaha I just noticed your signature icon steinie. That is hilarious :) |

In the Live aspect I beleive you have to use the file locator for your textures first before it works properly. I could be wong but may be worth a try. |

It's not only textures not displaying in the ME, the preview doesn't even change color. There just is no preview of any shader at all. Just a gray sphere. Do you mean just the file locator for a texture? or do you mean something else? I can load textures fine, just no preview on the preview sphere. |

Do you have to have the vray engine for the preview? I used to have vray but I don't anymore. But I seem to remember it stop previewing when i was working and it never came back, not when I uninstalled vray. It should still preview without vray right? |

VRay is required for the preview, since the preview is a render of the material. I actually prefer the preview off, because it takes time to render and hardly ever matches the lighting that's in my scene. |

Doh! That would explain it lol. Thanks Jack. No big deal. I just thought it was something that was supposed to work that wasn't. |

I still find it strange that the ME (and render window) in workspace requires an optional render engine (Vray) to run and does not use the native Lightworks... |

I agree with you that it is odd to give preference to a optional add on, but Lightworks is not native to Workspace or 7.x for that matter.
To me I think the ME should default to handling and working DX9 materials. The VRay part should be added on when VRay is added on... it's a mystery to me too why it was decided to do it the other way... |
