Well before the next SMC and having a Sunday to spare I thought I'd have a start at something for the monthly challenge... coming in late on this I know, so I probably won't get it finished. The other entries are absolutely fantastic so I'm just making up the numbers :p

But here's a WIP anyway. It's got tons of bad-practice geometry which I'm ignoring for now...

All C&C welcome... but not much to go on yet.

No probs.

Quick update - added the side fins and delete some edges temporarily...

Hi Blakeo, great modeling. Last week the WD HD crashed in our old PC (luckily not used for Ts work) so I look at it with mixed feelings :

I noticed you're having some issues with depth buffer precision in your realtime display. I get that a lot, too. Here's a fix that Stan showed me:
9671

You can find it in the D3DView object off the top level in the LE.

Change the Far Clip to a smaller distance that your model or scene still fits inside, like 500 or 250.

Change the Near Clip to something larger like 1.0.

The down side of the change is that if you need to zoom in for close up detail on a really small model that it may get clipped by the near clip plane, so you have to tweak the values to get the best results for your particular project. The reason for this trade off is because the bit depth buffer is still only 16-bit on today's video cards.

Hope that helps!

Thanks Jack - that 'problem' often bugs me. Especially when trying to get the whole model in for wireframes, like in the SMCs. Great to know how to adjust it - didn't even think you could! Ta. :D

Georg: Thanks. Sorry if I'm reminding you of bad times! HD crashes are not fun... :o I've started taking the precaution of doing regular (well regular-ish) backups onto an external USB 400gb HD. So cheap these days and enough room to backup my entire system, laptop and my partner's laptop together! Don't know what I'd do if I lost my tS work....

Update: Added the disk spindle, metal plate cover and the other bit :) (I think it's something to do with the ribbon connecting to the read/write heads.

Also added a few screws, but I've used a shortcut and only modelled the heads. So minus a few points there :p

Second pic is a shader test.

Looks real! Very nice! ;)

Hurry up though, Jack Edwards is needing that very soon. :d

Oh, and make it a 15K rpm model.

LOL Thanks James. I thought about getting a WD Raptor but just couldn't justify the price. ;)

Awesome work here Blakeo. I love that blueprint look for the wires. Render is looking good too.

Another update - Added the read/write heads, ribbon cable, top cover and some extra details to the body interior. Also fixed some bad geometry and added in edges (still plenty of that though really - I should add a lot more edges ideally) Used boo!eans for the screw holes - my only venture across the bridge. :)

There's plenty more to add - I've not touched the PCB underneath, for example. I doubt I'll get any more done - but I'll try to at least get a nice render up.

OK Here's the final Image.

Rendered in VRay 1.51. I used two area lights, and an infinite light with GI and subtle HDRI mainly for reflections.

There are problems with the spindle and metal cover - They're both faceted. The geometry has 'floating' verices from using the polydraw tool. I couldn't use SDS without adding loads of edges, and using AutoFacet produced weird effects. Also the ribbon cable didn't come out at all well, with strange triangles. I simply had no more time to fix these things :(

Other than that I'm pretty pleased with it. Enjoy. :)
