February 2008 MMC Challenge Theme "Hey this thing can fly!"

The theme can be interpreted in your own way so that your rendering sends this message. "Hey this thing can fly" Of course it could mean Flying but it could also mean speed too or how about something man-made like a Jet or organic like a greyhound dog.
The interpretation is up to you the Artist.
I am hoping this will be a popular subject and drum up some interest. So please participate if you can.:)

Here's the rules (from Jack's original Challenge) :

The idea is to have a challenge that is geared more towards the complete 3D development cycle from concept through modeling, surfacing, lighting, rendering, and post process. This is a chance for TSer's to really show their stuff and help motivate the production of portfolio quality images.

1.) Submission expresses the topic. If topic is an object, then it must include at least one instance of the object which should be the focus of the image.
2.) Use your own work. No pre-made purchased or free models, please.
3.) Start a Work In Progress thread for your submission.
4.) Submission should be one image and a link to your WIP thread.
5.) Indicate tools used to create your submission. TS should be the primary application used to create the image. Post Processing in a paint program is ok.

It's important that everyone who's planning to enter start a WIP thread. With difficult challenges like this many entries are over ambitious and don't make it to completion so in many cases it may be likely that judging will have to take place on the WIPs.

Deadline: Changed to

New Deadline: March 21 at 10:00pm EST
Judging Ends March 28th at 8:00 pm EST

Unless everyone agrees to an extension like in the past.

Put on your thinking caps and
Good luck!!

rjeff, I'm glad this one sparked an interest! I'm still designing and developing mine in my head. A Goldberg contraption keeps coming to mind. This might be a huge project so an extension might be needed (at least for me) but we will all decide that later.

Anyone else want to join us?

Hopefully I'll squeeze something in, althoug time looks a bit tight at the mo. I was considering something Goldberg-ish as a possibility, but I've done that once already for an SMC so was thinking of going down a more straightforward route - a big ugly/unlikley-looking aircraft...

lol - I started late too. But that's ok. I'm just treating it as an extended speed challenge.

EDIT: I forgot to post a link to my W.I.P. thread. Here it is -

My rendering won't be in the vote but I will need another month to finish. I think two of you might be able to finish in time. However the purpose of this challenge is not speed but quality. So unless I get complaints I would be willing to extend it one more month.
The entries so far are very cool and I really don't want anyone to rush it. We might even get some new entries along the way!

What do you all think?

Well I don't really mind - I was probably one of the few who could have been ready for the end of this week as I'm close-ish to being done, so I suppose I lose out a little as others will get to 'catch up'. But with my track record, I'll probably just come second anyway, however long I get!

But I guess it gives me a bit more time to fine tune, get some feedback, tweak some more etc plus time to do the SMC which would otherwise have been difficult.

I want Nez to have competition!;) besides rjeff your already a Bud!:)

James I'd like to see the Pink Pigs and Lemon Helicopters in the final Rendering.

A flying Redneck Winnebago is just too cool.

Nez you have time for atmosphere! (You have to show me your texturing techniques)

Kena keep it going, you've got time now!

Anybody have a model of a really cool circuit board I can use...;)

New Deadline: March 21 at 10:00pm EST

Judging Ends March 28th at 8:00 pm EST

Anyone else wanting to join it is not too late.

Remember to submit one Rendering for the Judges when you are done with your WIP.

Gee, thanks! ;)

Actually, I've been working on test renders yesterday for my final scene setting and if I can sort out some strangeness with the shadows, I should be well pleased with the atmosphere - I'll maybe PM you with a sneak peak...

As for texturing - well I'll post another reply later, need to get on with some work just now, but happy to share.

Now, now - you know the rules! :No pre-made objects...:D But if you want som egood examples, look at the previous challenge on computer components -there were some good graphics card models! Actually, I do have a circuit board texture that came with TS that you could use, but it's not that impressive (and only 640x427pixels) - you could probably find better on Google. Alternatively, look at what JamesMC did with his power supply project on the aforementioned challenge - he draw an excellent circuit board texture ina vector app.

Textures (seeing as you asked)

In this instance, I created my primary texture whcih I've used for most of the key aircraft parts by combining two existing texture images in Paintshop Pro - the two images are below. These were individually 'tiled' to enlarge them and layered together - I can't specificially rember which blend mode I used and don't have the file on this computer although I could check at home. I think I reduced the contrast on the underlying image (the 'old zinc' one) before layering the tiled image on top.

After this I created additional layers for extra panel lines I wanted to show, which I drew in with a darker colour using the line tool. This layer (over a plain background) was also used to generate a bump map - although I need to reduce the amplitude still further as it's still a bit too pronounced.

Any insignia, markings etc (e.g. the crew names by the canopies, designation numbers, warning marks etc) have then been drawn in on another layer, allowing me to easily reposition them should the placement be off - checked this by saving out my texture, applyng it to the model to check where markings were placed and tweaking as necessary. I also kept a copy of the reference grid image in my PSP file at all times so I could check where parts of the image ended up relative to that grid image as applied to the model.

This isn't quite how I would normally texture - tend to use layering within the TS material editor, using various images as image masks for the layers to try to break up anything too uniform (at least, that's what I've been trying out over the last few months!) I think/hope my texturing has improved a fair bit since I started posting stuff here!

Thanks rjeff, but Nez made me painfully aware of the "Rules"....:(:D

That is ok I'll just use a texture map on a cube for a quickie. The modeling is not real important in this case. Here is a question everyone can help me with.

What motherboard is out there that if I messed it up you would actually have a nervous breakdown? (cry) Something expensive...hehehe
