I find that there is no cropping relationship between what I see on the workspace screen and what renders in VRAY. To arrive at the proper cropping, all I can do is run lo-res trials until I discover what the right zoom amount is to produce the desired result in the VRAY render. The JPG below shows the huge difference between workspace and VRAY cropping.

Does anyone know of a better way to control things so VRAY reflects the Workspace cropping? Thanks for any clues.

Add another one to the 'Why isn't this the default setting?!' list.

Yes i know one way..

Create another 3dview and set the window dimension as 480x640.. or for example if you need to render a 500x1000px set 250x500 using the same aspect ration.. will give you the proportion..

Then, when you need to render the image, remember have your window selected before render..

Sorry my poor explanation.

BTW, STAN! great signature :)

BTW, STAN! great signature :)

Asking for VRay in avatars and signature is a good lobbying method.

I'm sure that if 80% of this forum users were placing a request for VRay in each message, we could have a chance to be heard.

Thanks to all for your replies. Stan's suggestion to use "view" was a new one for me. I had never noticed that option before. It is useful, but.....

What I failed to mentioned in my question was that I want to do hi res renders. For instance 1000 x 2000 or more. Stan's "view" option or Prodigy's suggestion to open a separate window both have the limitation of screen resolution (using "view"). There seems to be no way to see in advance how a hi res is going to crop except by trial and error. So I start a hi-res render, wait until I can see the layout, then cancel the render and try a different camera fov and try again.

Unless you guys have another idea. (Is there a way to specify the dimensions of a 2nd 3D window?) Thanks again to all.

you could always try using the window settings of the workspace window. click on the icon in upper left to acess the panel and set it to a ratio of what you need for your render size.. 1000x2000 could be a 100x200 workspace. ..that should work, looked ok on a quicky test, not sure if it effects render quality.

Hey if you guys can put together enough money to get a development license from Chaos group we could write our own VRay plugin. ;)

That or an exporter to the stand-alone version.

If truespace is destined to only be a platform for user-driven rendering initiatives, then it's already dead. Blender rules this world.

V-Ray renders using the sizes specified in the render dialog, and doesn't automatically (by default) take the size from the viewport - and this includes the ratio of sides, not just the actual size. So if your view is 1340 x 832, and you render to 1024x768, you will see different things included and excluded in the render as opposed to the viewport.

Ensure the ratio of width to height is the same, though, and you are fine. You can set the exact size of the 3D window using the options in the top left, so you could set that to 1000x800 say. Then you can use V-Ray to render to anything that matches that ratio, eg 2000x1600 or 3000x2400, or partial sizes too (doesnt have to be an exact multiple), and what you see in the 3D window will be exactly what you see in the V-Ray render. There will be no effect in quality in using a larger or smaller V-Ray image size compared to the window size - this simply ensures that you can use your 3D window to accurately set up the field of view that you will get in your render.

HTH!

Except with a broken car you have rights - get it fixed or get your money back. Imagine if software users had these rights?

Stan,

Thanks again. I actually knew of that window setting panel and had forgotten about it. I now see that Tom G was refering to that also and I still didn't get it. That, along with Prodigy's suggestion to use a secondary window for render DOES WORK!

I set the secondary window to the 1x2 shape I want (350 x 700 fits my monitor well), then set VRAY to 1000 x 2000, then click the secondary window before rendering. It works perfectly - I checked the result in photoshop - exactly 1000 x 2000 and cropped as intended. No more trial and error. Thanks again.
