Hello folks :D

Well here at last is the completed picture. Including volumetrics! I've not gone for the full-on photoreal feel but I've tried to incorporate as many of the suggestions that were made as possible. I'm pretty pleased with this final result.

OK - credits: the plants have all been extensively modified (retextured and simplified to reduce poly counts) but came originally from 3dplants.com (http://3dplants.0catch.com/download.html). The planetary globe has been retextured and comes with trueSpace 6.6 object library as does the coat stand I have used as a candle stand and the vase holding the flower. The heads of both the Wizard and the Witch are extensively modified versions of the stock heads that come with the Facial Animator.

The stained glass window is from a photograph I took in an old Anglican church here in New Zealand that dates from the early colonial days. Everything else was either recycled from my earlier work (the clock, the plant stands, the stairs and doorway etc) or modelled specifically for this scene - the throne, the war axes and so on.

Composition and lighting all by me with constructive suggestions from fellow trueSpacers - thanks folks.

I hope y'all like the result - feedback and comments welcome as always

Well I really like what you did to this place! I see many changes that have made your rendering and composition even better. Nice work.

p.s. I was afraid there would be rendering of a toilet when I saw the title:)

I love this one.

The bump on the foor and wall could be a little bit more discreet though. I use a lot of bump in my shaders but always at a low value, like 0.05 or 0.02 : just to add a pinch of depth in the texture.

It's a great picture!

What do you think about wizard-like objects. Maybe some hovering objects, or half visible things.

a ghosts, green smoke with a face, a spider net, a raven, a black cat?

Really great image Stephen. I've really notice that with every finished image you've posted, the quality gets better and better. (where will it all end I ask myself??:D)

Thanks for the great feedback folks - it certainly helps to keep me motivated!

p.s. I was afraid there would be rendering of a toilet when I saw the title Chuckle! What do you think is behind that door at the top of the steps? It's the 'Other' throne room!!

Great work, W!zard. Are you planning on entering this in the next monthly comp.?Yes in fact it's already uploaded as of last night.

Thanks for the suggestion Wigand. This is one of a series of pictures in a story about the two characters you see here. There will be plenty of magical and Wizardy things happening in other pictures plus the type of magic these guys do is quite subtle and not that spectacular - well not at first any way, hopefully the final results will be spectacular!!:D

Really great image Stephen. I've really notice that with every finished image you've posted, the quality gets better and better. (where will it all end I ask myself??) Chuckle! Thanks Mr Mouse. Comments about quality really mean somehing coming from you! Where will it end? A good question indeed! Hopefully it will end with me getting enough cash together to afford to upgrade or replace my system so I can run tS 7 on it. A kind friend (and fellow trueSpacer) has just gifted me with a nice new copy of Vue 5 and that, like tS 6.6 only just runs on my present PC.

Of course once I get the machine I want there is no real end in sight!

Thanks to all my friends here who commented and contributed - ya'll rock!

Just a brief update to this thread - I was very pleased to see this picture was selected for an honourable mention in this months Calligallery and I'm also very pleased top see that it has been featured on this weeks 3dcommune newsletter which is a good plug for our favourite software!

In addition to having this straight trueSpace picture featured in their weekly pick from their galleries I also had another picture mentioned - this time in their Vue gallery.

I've posted it here which may be a bit naughty seeing as it was actually rendered with Vue 5 Esprit but the truck (and the Dododecahedron birds) were all modelled with trueSpace. Not too easy to see at this resolution but the passengers inside the truck are none other than My Wizard and Spacewitch characters, also the product of trueSpace.

Good job there, on the initial image, and on the Vue one you've posted here! Good to see work being shown on other forums too, about time more people got to see just how good tS artists are :)

Thanks!

I've always liked the ... kind of ... water color illustration look Wizard gets with his textures, and I'm not sure how you do that! You have a very definite style that goes back to the little town scene you worked on a couple of years ago.

Aside from the story book illustration look, I like the details in the first image. There's a lot to look at. I might have been tempted to go for that light against dark, gothic look, which you seem to have included with the atmosphere, but not so much that you miss out on the details.

The second image, well I just like it!!!! 3D water color; what a concept! With it's touch of whimsy this could be an illustration in a "young person's book".

Well Done S

Thanks Tom - I make it a point to promote trueSpace as much as I can in as many places as I can - in fact since getting Vue I've been posting a bit at Cornucopia.com and using as much of my trueSpace stuff as possible whilst also making sure everyone knows about it!! Caligari have been extremely good to me and it's important to me to 'share the love' as they say!

Parva: Thanks Marcel. I prefer the overall look of trueSpaces Lightworks renderer to Vues but I've seen a lot of great art done with Vue. Coming to Vue from trueSpace I find it's easy enough to use and I do like the built in vegetation and landscaping capabilities. tS is great for modelling and I'm pleased with a lot of the landscape work I've done with it - Vue is just another tool for my art at the end of the day.

Paul Thanks Paul. No great secret about my textures - I rarely use procedural textures or bumps. I prefer to use an image and often use the same image for the bump map. The tS material editor is brilliant as I can take a single texture image and layer colours and other textures on top - I use a lot of layered textures and alpha maps. I never use a texture from the Net without tweaking it to make it my own, and I've gotten good at totally changing the original texture. Distressing textures is great fun and I often have a cube off to one side as I model (in tS 6.6) which I use for painting layered textures on. I then render out my distressed texture (off the cube) and reapply the result to my model as a single layer - this helps keep the textures at a convenient size too (it also makes it easier to export my models to other apps).

Re the storybook look - I deliberately aim for a realistic fantasy look (rather than a direct photorealistic look) and most of my pictures are intended to illustrate a story line that hovers in the back of my head. They are all supposed to take place on an Earth-like planet called Inthandonia where magic still happens and you are just as likely to see a giant spaceship as you are to see a Witch and a Wizard driving about in a vintage truck.

I'm currently building a second airship to go with my first one and I want it to have a sort of Victorian look to it. I also have plans for a large biplane, a spacestation and a space shuttle, several ultramodern cities, one mostly destroyed, one not, and a lot of semi-medieval villages. Watch this space!! :D

I was born in Britain but grew up and still live in New Zealand and I often find that my art somehow unconsciously forms a blend of the two combined with the whimsical feel you mention.

Thanks again

WZRD

Just going through some of the older threads for inspiration and happened upon this one - really like the throne room image in particular. Your tip above about layered/distressed textures sounds like a great idea - I've not tried either of these yet, but it sounds a very useful trick, and presumably cuts down render times by simplifying the textures also. I need to find some tinker-time...

Thanks Nez - I'm particularly pleased with the Throne Room picture myself. Building layerd textures then rendering them off a cube is great trick. If I'm doing the whole project in tS I don't usually do it as tS handles it all so well - but in particularly big scenes it can make a significant difference to both file size and render times to reduce the layered textures to a single layer - it's a bit like merging layerts in PhotoShop I guess. The technique is excellent when exporting to other applications like Vue which will only read single layered textures from tS.
