I thought it would be a neat idea for anybody entering the speed model challange over at http://www.threedy.com (http://www.threedy.com/site/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=42) to post their entry here as well for people to see.

So to get the ball rolling here is my entry for challange #121. Look forward to seeing what anyone else comes up with. Maybe we could actually start our own challanges if we get enough interest.

This was rendered with TS7 with lightworks and HDRI and modeled in the player.

Cheers,

Awesome job on the brush, Daybe!

I've been thinking about registering and joining in some of the challenges over there... lack of imagination is holding me back at the moment though...

Be cooler if we could get our own challenges going here as well. It'd be a good way to build portfolios and get some more tS art out there.

Thanks Jack,

I think having our own model challange would be a good idea as well, if we get enough interest perhaps we can get one going.

Cheers,

Dave

I'm up for it, I need the practice rendering and setting up lights and materials anyway. I did a hairbrush, but I ran into a couple of issues that held me back before I had to get going on another project.

Here's my contribution. I didn't make the time limit so can't enter it, but figure I'll post it here anyway since it was good practice. :-)

Car sounds good but maybe not for a speed model challange but I could be wrong, no law saying we can't do this as well. I have been sourcing some reference material for a car the last couple of days, maybe now is a good as time as any.

Cheers,

Sure I'm game for that. I've already done my reference photos and blueprints for the car I was planning to model.

Think we'll probably need more like a 2 week challenge than a 1 hour one though... :p

Well, I have been practicing car modeling, just started one yesterday, it's been years since the last one I can remember doing (Andy Kays tutorial I think). The point I am at now is a bit raggy, so I wouldn't mind starting all over :D

2 weeks would probably be about the time it will take to model and render for me...

How about a chair?

I was joking about a car but if that's what people want... I'll watch! I'll be damned if I'm starting another one just yet!

I like Brian's approach, keep adding letters til you get something easier! Chair sounds like a good idea, plenty of scope.

I think for starters a chair is a good idea, I am also flexible with time if people need more perhaps we could set a time limit to 2 hours or so for people who work a little slower. Just a thought. Anyway I was thinking we could use similar rules to what they have a at the threedy forum.

Cheers.

How about a Charlize? :D

(I'm sorry, that was just too easy to pass up!)

I'm all for starting simple, seeing how I just figured out how to model a cube! ;)

:) Of course then we could move on to original ChAracteRs.... :p

Chair sounds like a nice compromise.

Guess we need to do a poll and come up with a list of subjects for the challenges.

2 hours is ok for me. Between trying to learn Scatter and accidently getting my mesh stuck smoothed (and having to start over) a few times, that's about how long it took me to do the brush.

Be nice to have a two week time frame challenge also for more demanding stuff, but guess we gotta see if anyone participates in the 2 hour ones first.

So unless I'm mistaken rules are:

* Must model from scratch. (No importing or using objects stored in your library.)

* Must finish the modeling part in 2 hours once started.

* Cannot use smoothed surfaces for the wireframe, but is ok in the render.

My question is how long to we want to allow for texturing and rendering and how is that time allocated? Does render time only count the time processing the final render, or all test renders and lighting/render setup?

Possible ideas for future challenges:

mailbox

cell phone

laptop

lamp

knife

digital camera

pen

teapot

frying pan

eye glasses

watch

silverware

mouse

video game controller

stapler

trashcan

cigarette lighter

That's all I can think of at the moment. LOL I'm sure you guys can come up with more and cooler stuff.

Cool list, all good.

Jack in other forums, texturing ligthing and rendering are not included in the time as people with slower machines would be at a disadvantage so we can do the same as the main focus is creating the model.

I'm a little unclear on the meaniong of this. Do you mean that you would have to turn off the SDS layers before doing a screencap of the wireframe, or something else?

basically what this means is a final render with SDS smoothing is fine and encouraged, but when you include a wire frame turn off any smoothing when you do you screen capture, that's all, basically so others can see how you created your final shape and possibly learn something.

That's pretty much what I thought. This does raise a problem, at least in my case, as with the limited experimenting I've done with SDS I tend to do stuff at different levels of SDS, in essence treating each SDS layer as a finer poly layer, rather than just slapping on a layer or 2 of SDS to smooth things out.

I don't know how different this is to other people's workflow, but thought it was worth mentioning. In this instance would a screen cap of each SDS layer be required?

Hm, good question not sure really but I don't think it would be required to capture each level that may get a little out of hand, I guess we will just have to play it by ear as I am sure you are not the only one that works this way and see how it goes but I think it would be ok with showing it with all the layers removed regardless of the weights used or additional work on SDS layers.

Hey Daybe,

since you're our resident speed modeling pro (and unless anyone else out there wants the job) I think we should nominate you as honorary modertator for the challenges. :D

I'm ready to get started soon as the challenge gets posted.

Guess the challenge threads should go in the roundtable forum...?

Idea for one of them:

http://www.peugeot-concours-design.com/

It would be a fresh approach to those who just finished or still working on a vehicle.

Ya those are cool, concept cars, sweet! we could do this, we may need to add a bit more time for modeling but that's ok, no reason why we can't.

Thanks
