Never thought I would post in this section...but I've actually finished an image

3562

Wanted to create a face that shows emotion: sadness, worry...

and I wanted it to show in a less than pretty face, hence the Ghoul.

At least I think it doesn't appear dangerous, but I doubt anyone wants to cuddle up and comfort him? ;)

The full size image is 4616x6528 pixels and I'm currently working on adding detail with Photoshop.

You might notice some problem areas, like the scars on the top right side of the head.

It's jagged because the old female head I resculpted had highest polygon density around the nose and eyes.

I want the detail level to be extreme before I print it with my brand new Canon A3 printer. :p

Here's a short description of the work:

The "cloudy" background is just a fractal noise image generated with Darktree and then using the "render lighteffect" filter in Photoshop.

WOW! Very nice Lars! I think the 3D version even has more emotion than the sketch. It's so nice to see 3D characters with some emotion and not the blank unfocused stare!! I like it even better then the "Rider". This one has a soul (no pun intended).

This is a winner if I ever saw one. Please submit to monthly stills contest if you haven't already!

Also, I think you should post this over at CGSociety.org. This should be posted everywhere!

Thanks also for the overview of how it was made.

Thanks :D

Nice to hear that the emotion thing worked.

And I thought it would be a nice twist to use :( instead of  which might

have been more natural for a Ghoul ;-)

I'll see if I post it to the gallery when I've tweaked it. I've seen heated discussions in the past about the gallery with images created using several tools... not sure I want to be flamed. :o

Excellent work Shike, and you should post it-it was made primarily in trueSpace with tools used elsewhere that tS does not have.

Funny thing though-I really like render number 2. (key light) very moody. Would be nice to see a render with all the other lights turned down very, very low so that particular view is prominent...I like dark and moody...:D

lol. Transformation from the old head to the new reminds me of a girl I once dated though she ended up with the decidedly  rather than :( look.

Very cool! Zbrush is for texturing work right (edit: guess I should read the pics closer... also sculpting... haven't used zbrush before myself)? Definitely submit it!

P.K.

I don't think you'll get flamed, and even if you do, I agree with splinters that trueSpace was the primary tool used especailly for the rendering and the original modelling of the head before exporting. Besides, how many poser figures have been in gallery images?

I also like #2 as it is. Makes it a spooky sad ghost. :)

Thank you all ! :D

Hm, #2 you say? I actually preferred #3.... had a sorta creepy fleshy look...but it would probably drain all the black ink from my printer

Regarding the lighting I wanted to try something new (for me)....classic lightsetup and well balanced.

Was slightly depressed when I reprinted my old Workbench and Pregnoid images and discovered that they where "underexposed"...wanted to avoid that this time ;)

I think #2 is so cool because it still shows the emotion, and yeah they would probably drain your printer :)

Regarding your goal of making a more standard portrait, I think you nailed it.

Looks fantastic Lars!

I miss some more details in the texture map but just my personal thought ;)

The surface would really benefit from real displacment (subdiv displacement etc.) which interacts better with the light. Hopefully tS gets this as soon as possible, this model would be a candidate to show the power of this ;)

Outstanding Lars!!!! Simply outstanding!!! I've spent a long time waiting for your latest work but this makes all the waiting worth while.

I've been trying out different 3d demos over the holidays and Zbrush was one of them, but I found myself getting very lost very quickly! this image makes me want to have another try.

Bravo sir.

BTW. If you dont enter this in the monthly's I'll fly to sweden and smack you with a hering!!! :D

Stunning work Lars! Educational too - thanks for sharing some insights into your working methods with this.

You've done an outstanding job of capturing human emotion in this one - your ghoul likes like a poster boy warning against the side effect of too much stress and worry!

Simple brilliant work IMHO.

I'm jealous! My computer would only be powerful enough to render the nose...the part that fell off...

Stop staying away so long. I enjoy your great work.:)

Thanks everyone ! :D

I was abit worried that everyone had forgotten me during the looong absence ;)

And since vacation is over now...see you all in summer when my next vacation starts :p

@Madmouse:

Herring you say...that's a fishy threat :D

I hope you downloaded the tutorial movies for ZBrush, because without them I don't think I'd ever figgured out how that strange software worked...

@Parva:

Displacement would be nice, I've seen extremely detailed faces where they

actually do skin-pores with it.:D

I choosed to stay at 588k polys though since my computer was close to implode by it. A nice juicy 64bit computer would be nice ;)

It's odd, but I like 4 and 5 best. Something mysterious about them. Kind of like Nightmare on Elm Street, but less in your face. Love it! Still trying to figure out how the heck to use Zbrush...

Gone off the boil a bit myself recently, so haven't been around the forum. However, I had to post a comment on this image. This is fantastic, not just in the quality of the render, but the subject matter is full of pathos. This is the sort of thing they'll post in the galleries at cgtalk. Everyone, who is anyone, is using zbrush these days after all. Must get a copy myself.

Well done.

Chris

Thanks for the nice comments guys ! :D

Nice to see that more people is considering the ZBrush+trueSpace combo..

..a little bit worrying that everyone (including me) seems to be confused by ZB :o

( Since Pixologic made a workflow so different from all other softwares, they should really have made a better beginners introduction..?)

I do have vague memories that the script-tuts were focusing on the pointless (from my point of view) 2.5D painting which is just 2D painting with Z-depth which allows shadows but can never be rotated. It's stuck on a canvas.

A strongly remember that I constantly made the mistake of leaving the "Edit" mode (one of the top icons) of my 3D object (called "Tool" in ZB....stupid name:rolleyes: )

by selecting brushes and functions not supported by 3D editing.

My strongest rekommendation: If ZB popup a warning window with a couple of choises....think twice. That is a warning that your 3D object will be converted to 2.5D.

It's not dangerous...you might need to clear that layer, and then use the right side tool menu to draw your tool again.. nothing is lost unless you close ZB.

Also, the rightside and top icons are mainly for 3D, the leftside are mainly 2.5D, so be careful with the lefties.

( don't have ZB in front of me now but I think I remember correctly)

And since I'm finally finished with a picture I'm going to relax a bit and see if there is any goodies in the tS7.5 beta that might make my life easier in the future :D
