Well Mr. Jackson is finished... I had some good fun getting the tones of his skin just right and I'm pretty pleased with the results.
Rendered using HDRI and one infinite light for the purple light cast from the light sabre. A little post production done in PSP7 & PSP 11.
I hope you like the end result.

This one turned out very nice. I can't help but think of OJ when I look at it, but that's only 'cause my mind wanders so. The no eyelashes thing is a bit creepy, otherwise excellent work. |

Very nice model and rendering.. are one thing, the emotion in his face is like he have some kind of scare... maybe change to a combat face make the image more impresive.. but the model its incredible..
Excelent work.. |

hahaha the look on his face certainly captures how OJ would have looked if they had got a pic of him with a weapon still in hand....
Beautiful job MadMouse, the texture especially looks good. |

Amazing, as always! What were your shader settings? |

Thanks Guys,
Amazing, as always! What were your shader settings?
Nothing very clever really. The skin was made with two layers (both basic phong) one layer had no shininess or specularity and the other had values of 0.4 & 0.8 respectively and then the two layers were blended with an alpha map to control the various levels of shininess of his skin.
Thanks again

I would like a tutorial on THAT shading technique. I'm not good at alpha mapping yet. I'm not good an anything yet. I've only ever had one honerable mention in the monthly contests. |

To be honest Kena its exactly the same technique as in the tutorial that I know you've already seen.:- CLICK HERE (http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/showthread.php?p=23393#post23393)
The only difference if that the alpha map uses various shades of grey to contol the amount of shininess that shows through from one layer to another.
Hope that helps, if not drop me an I.M. and i'll try to explain more. (I'm at work at the moment so no images to post. Sorry)

Still don't think it looks anything like Judy Garland... :-)
Stunning work, as usual, Steve. As JPSofCA mentioned the no eyelashes is a bit creepy but it's a minor point on a stunning model and pic. Congrats... again! |

You put YOUR eyebrows that close to a Light Saber and see what happens....
Seeing that he's been injured he might be singing like Judy Garland too...
I sure hope you take me up on the offer of putting up one of your tutorials on Texturing or UV Mapping! |

Really?! Then your texturing work is freaking incredible. I'd have sworn that there was some SSS going down somewhere. The skin looks fantastic! |

I've hesitated making any comments because this is an incredible portrait of S. Jackson. I couldn't do that with pencil and paper much less yanking around vertices! Shoot! I have a hard enough time doing portraits with a camera!
The skin is completely believable. Nothing else to say. Looks like skin!
But the reason I've hesitated is because the expression on Mr. J's face. I didn't want to detract from all your hard and detailed work - but - all I can think of is that in the middle of his light saber fight, the bean burrito he ate at lunch is about to make it's presence felt! (not a really good time for that to happen!!!!!)
I know this has already won a spot in the gallery, and rightly so, but I think a more determined look on his face (push his eyebrows down a little and a squint around the eyelids) would be more effective.
It's just my impression.

Firstly Paul, thank you for the kind words.
As for Mr Jackson expression you are very correct and this has been the most wide spread criticism of this image on this and other galleries and forums. I think it was a case of being to close to the project to see the problem until it was to late. (Isn't that why we post W.I.P's??? AH-HA!! so its actually not my fault, its everyone else's for not telling me before now!!!!!! ;) )
It's a golden rule of mine to never revisit a project once I've drawn a line under it and called it finished. But I must admit I am tempted to go back in on this one and do the job properly this time.
Thanks again Paul

EDIT:
It's just my impression. Hey, I didn't know you did impressions!!! hows your Samuel L Jackson?? |

I know you are kidding here, but I did go and look at the WIP thread (star is born) and the last pic there has no eyebrows yet, so the surprised look must mostly come from the eyebrows.. |

I'm arguably one of your biggests fans Steve (though I've not got to the stage of stalking you!) but I find myself agreeing with Chesters comment about the eyes.
I just rewatched The Terminator and The Terminator 2: Judgement Day - watching the two movies back to back I couldn'nt help noticing the first terminator had no eyebrows where as the second one - the 'good' Arnie - had a nice healthy crop of bushy eyebrows (vital equipment for any good cyborg). My point? Eyebrows and especially eyelashes are something we so often see that their abscence is rather disconcerting and distracting.
Your Mace Windu pic is thoroughly excellent but eyelashes could potentially lift it into the totally sublime category. IMHO of course ;)
PS Thanks for your kind words over at Renderosity. |

Ok guys point taken. I'll really have to go back and rework this one. Maybe into the pulp fiction version that I considered at the start of the project.
Thanks
