So I have been a user of trueSpace for a number of years now, and have registered for the forums here three or four times at least but I haven't been very active on them. SO... I figured what better way to be active then post a finished render.
It's a piece for a product we are doing for the L.A. Marathon. It will become the background for a poster that features runners statistics and photos of the course. Most of the stuff I do has been small scale stills; stuff that can be included in a web design, composited in with artwork in Photoshop or buttons on a webpage. I created a few scenes for use in product literature we had for the Las Vegas Marathon and was encouraged by the results I saw. There has been a lot of things I would have liked to have been able to do with trueSpace over the years, but I haven't had the opportunity to do so.
Anyways, any feedback would be appreciated. |

Wigmo, First welcome aboard!
Your work you submitted is very nice. My only question would be what material is the base of the stand made of?
See participating isn't that painful!.....yet.....:)
p.s. You left your t-square in the box!!!;) |

Thanks. I got a splinter from a T-Square once in my high school commercial art class, never liked those things...
The base of the stand gave me some fits, and I am happy enough with it but not 100% satisfied. I used a multi-layer paint. The bottom layer is an environment map consisting of some random celebrity getting her space on the walk of fame. The top coat is the standard aluminum material in 6.6 (but I probably changed the actually color while tweaking.) |

The base of the post does look a lot like a combination of glass and aluminum. Not sure I've seen anything quite like it before (in the real world anyway).
Overall, very nice!

It looks like luminance, diffuse and/or reflectance are set too high. The brightness and the strong reflection of the rod makes it look like glass. Rest looks very good. |

Environment maps rarely look as good as 'real' reflections.
Paint your red carpet image on a big dome that surrounds your scene (http://www.spacekdet.com/tutorials/skydome/). (big enough so that it's just out of the frame)
Turn off shadowcasting for the dome.
Re-render with raytracing on.
Everything else looks good, just the pole base jumps out as needing a little help.
You might want to try a reflective chrome base layer with a second layer of ansiotropic, and maybe even a third layer with a smudge map. It does look like ambient/diffuse/reflect levels are a bit high. |

Try SpaceKdet's idea. A photo of a city street might make it more environmentally accurate, if that's what you are going for.
As a background image for a text overlay, you may get away with just toning down the brightness by reducing it's diffusion.
All-in-all, it makes a really nice image as a poster.

One thing I would like to point out to new users. Don"t do this!!!!!!! Don't wait until you have a finished image to start using these forums. You don't realize how many of us here are frustrated teachers just waiting for the opportunity to impart the things we've learned about trueSpace.
I wonder how many potential tS artists have given up because they couldn't figure something out about tS but didn't want to come in to the community for fear of reprisal.
We're really nice people here!!!!!! It's about the only forum where some of us actually sign our real names!!!!

Not much I can add except to fully endorse what's already been said - especially the "welcome to the forums' bit! ;) |

Thanks for the tips on the stand. I will tweak the existing settings and see if I can't get something better. I will also try the other lighting suggestions as well when I get a chance. I went this route because the environment map just made the stand look cartoonish and it wouldnt cast any reflections from the scene. I tried to use a projector (which is what I am using for the shadows on the carpet) except everything but the stand managed to reflect the image, along with the added side effect of the image displaying the exact opposite of how I thought it would.
As for radiosity, ugh. Don't get me started. Each time I went to try to render it using radiosity my terrazzo texture maps turned into a big swirly mess. Very disappointed to say the least. It seemed to happen where I had objects that intersected each other, and I just don't have the free time at the moment to clean my objects up.
I might try to render the scene at home this weekend and post some updates. |

Here is a revised version with the stand material adjusted using some of the suggestions provided. I think it looks better than the prior version but I still don't think it is right. I'm going to try the dome suggestion either tonight or tomorrow and see how that compares.

I think: much better. The reduced brightness is less attention commanding and detracting from the rest of the composition. Any further refinement will be a plus. |
