Gates. But to where? A mansion? A cemetery? A park? Who knows! This was supposed to be a quick scene. Had the image in my head, simple geometry, not too difficult to texture or light, quick and fun. Ha! That's what I thought. Corrupt geometry and accidentally deleted textures folder are just two of the nightmares this 'quick, fun' scene has seen. The stubborn mare inside me made me determined to get it finished rather than abandon it and I'm glad I did. Make of it what you will...

Great stuff-very atmospheric. I can almost see a London Bobby strolling down the street, he spots a guy dressed in black about to open the gate and says:" Allo,allo,allo-what's yer game then? Come on, move along!"
Ok, too much caffeine here, I admit-but still an evocative scene! :-) |

I like everything about this render except one thing. Looking at it I cannot figure out scale. I think an added object to show scale would help. There are two plaques on the columns would they be about level with a peson's head? I really like the texturing job you did. |

Should a woman of your obvious breading be hanging around park gates after dark Kate? ;) :D
Great work. Only thing that jumped out at me was the cobbles look a little flat. Maybe uping the bump map would do the trick. |

Very nice Kate! First thing that came to my mind was Bill. Did he die? Was he cremated and stuffed into a Column? Is this a WIP or RIP? I hope that Vista is in the other Column. :p |

Very atmospheric Kate - I like it.
Years ago I did some evening classes in photography and I can still remember the tutor saying that whenever possible when photographing gates one should try to leave at least one of them open as it invites the viewer to enter further into the image - so, my suggestion FWIW is to open one of the gates slightly. Did someone just go in ... or come out?
Oh yeah and where is Bird? Out driving the Lambourgini? |

Mary Clarke </whisper>
Smashing scene yes. Somewhere near Whitechapel where Mary Clarke's twin sister avenges the deaths of those unfortunate women by taking Jack on a journey to Hell <sinister cellos>
Unusual that a woman would be a surgeon in those days but Jack told her everything she needed to know. Finally.

Very moody and...well, can't think of another word for atmospheric now when W!ZARD already used the perfect description ! :D |

another word for atmospheric
Evocative
Of foggy Victorian London perhaps and a surgeon's outfit tinkling away in the background. This is before stainless steel shaders.

Very atmospheric. I love the trees, are they image maps?
If I may make a suggestion, already mooted, that there is no sense of scale. The stone wall bricks look too large, assuming the wall height is over 6 feet. Reducing the brick size (maybe assume 10 to 12 inches) in height, giving more layers. Also, a wall of this type would typically have a slightly wider base layer for better footing. Placing the scamera at a lower angle, blow eye level, would enhance the scale also. Hope you can appreciate my point of view.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I can understand the few comments regarding scale and brick size but over here some of the larger, grander buildings have some HUGE bricks, that's kind of what I was going for. I was thinking about putting a person in, or more to the point, a shadow but opted for the more ominous emptiness. Similarly the gates themselves being closed, I prefer the more uncomfortable 'keep out' feeling rather than 'welcome'. And the cobbles - I tried uping the bump map but it made no noticeable difference. Must be the lighting cancelling it out slightly, or something.
The whole thing was intended mainly as an exercise in texturing and using simple geometry as I usually model detail and just use shaders. I also ended up with a picture that I'm happy with, which is the main thing (selfish moo!)
@W!ZARD - Bird has been banned from driving the Countach, I just can't afford the amount of speeding fines he keeps tapping me for!
Thanks again to everyone for the comments, much appreciated.
Oh, and here's an older version I did for fun:

I've seen many walls in Belgium, France and Germany with foot tall blocks. That is what I assumed you were using, given the size of the cobbles and tree leaves. That makes the wall about 4.5 feet high, the lamps about 10 to 11 feet high and the gates about 7 feet high. Sounds about right to me. You have an evening and a night view. I would like to see a morning or afternoon view and I would like to see a foggy night as well. :D
But... what are those diagional lines? |

I like this piece, Kate.
I think the simple parallel lines and flat planes of the piece helps add to the sense of formal and rigid society evoked by the image.
