I moved into a new place a few months back with hopes of finally having enough room to try my hand at green screening.

This is literally my first attempt. Just filmed a 20 second sequence of myself and two days later this is what happened. :D

(note: I am a Cancer on the Zodiac- so that is a zodiac sign on the flag - please do not infer and religious significance or comment on my part..please)

12 seconds...8 meg..wmv...720 x 480.. 30 fps..audio...

No need to critique though comments more than welcome, all just a test of the concepts, and as always a good laugh!

TrueSpace used for

'Potters' building

Helmet with flag

Face flesh

I must say, if I did take the time to keyframe every frame to make sure the helmet and flesh face stayed in synch with the video..? I think I would have really pulled something off! Right now I keyed every 4-5 frames on both, no reason to go nuts.

Note shadows of myself and helmet being 'cast' onto sign! Cool ! (sadly on background as well .. lol )

Well, Humdinger, the slight imperfections you've noted regarding the helmet and flesh give it that refined zest of artisticity :) No need to perfect this one.

I don't have the stuff to reproduce your attempt, but can you explain a bit more about the gear you used. Was it in a professional studio, or did you just paint a wall green. What shade of green. I notice on your atletic torso, neck and face a greenish shine, I suppose it's the reflectance of the background, so did you put strong light on it?

Very interesting, thanks for sharing this experiment with everyone. ;)

Hey that's pretty cool! Also how much commitment is that to your art, moving place just so you can create the animations you want to create :)

Would be interested to know more about your green screen technique too, fascinating subject. This is neat for just 2 days of work, and like you say you could easily tighten up the keyframes if you had wanted, though there is a certain charm to it done this way :)

And what on earth is that helmet design haha - I am sure glad you didn't wear that when we met you at SIGGRAPH ;)

Looking forward to more animations and experiments!

Well you gave me a good laugh! Funny I always imagined you shorter.:)

If you see "For Sale" signs next door to where you live, you'll know they were peeping-toms...

I would also like to know how you did this. The green screen technique looked like it worked pretty good.

More babble later..

for now - Prodigy - Flag was done with Cloth Motion plug-in

After helmet was animated, just 'fixed' a cloth motion object to it and let the sim do what it does so well.

Love that plug-in !!!!!!!

Minor revision...

Added Shell Oil sign in foreground, some cluods behind sign and in front of background.

As a finale' I may also have a big hole blown in my head that you can actually see through...oh and some brains too.

By the way..gotta love it all...

The Shell Sign also hides a moment when the helmet jumps a bit behind me at the start !!!

Pretty neat ! Hole in head could also be tweaked to reveal 3d objects within the head, also with more time I could have had the shadow of my head also have the hole in it.. too cool !!! Also though I was looking right at the camera here, making it easier - same process would work if I was turning my head.

Also neat is watching the huck of meat from the back of his head actually pass through then in and out of the shadow I am casting !!!

Note: TrueSpace was using profusely to create the 3d 'mattes' both images and animated avi' for use in the video editor.

This is a true hack, ideally I would have rendered elements such as the helmet out as a series of 32 bit images so they would blend as smooth as possible.

With all these I just rendered to a simple background color and keyed that out, hence the very hard edges. In other words, you can use TS to do the 'real deal' of these types of effects I have no doubt, as long as you plan it out and have an idea of what you are doing (especially taking the time, which I did not, to get the lighting in any of your 3d elements to match your real video footage).

Much of what i have accomplished here is a result of 15+ years of editing video more than my knowledge of 3D/ Truespace.

'whatever :D

PS

Will see about putting some images together to show the general work flow.
