Well I've finally finished this project:banana:

I want to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who took the time to comment and

encouraged me during the making of this image. As always, without the input of

the guys of this forum, this render would not of turn out half as good as it has.

CLICK HERE (http://www.madmousedesign.co.uk/uploaded/JPG-1-(1000x1000)) for a larger version.

I hope you like the end result, and take the time to comment once more.;)

Thanks again

ATB

Steve

(BTW before anyone asks, YES I will be posting this image at CG Society. But they better watch out if they turn this one down;) )

Love your work Steve so I know you will take what I say constructively but I must admit that the final product did not blow me away like the separate parts did. Maybe the anticipation raised my expectations of the final image somewhat.

This is technically excellent but from an 'artistic' point of view maybe it could have been a bit more 'moody'. Hard to put my finger on it and I do not want to detract from your excellent work. Perhaps it is because you have taken a HDRI/Shiny paint job look that the final render is so cleanly lit that it looks like a promo shot for a McFarlane sculpt. Maybe it is the proportions which do not appeal to my sense of imagery.

These are just my musings Steve and we go back far enough for you to know that I am just being critical (to keep you on your toes).

I guess I just pictured this as a character in a scene not on a plinth with dark eery lighting and flames reflecting...but again, when you wait and you have a creative mind, you start to envision your own take on this.

Hope that all helped...bottom line here; this is truly excellent work...:D

Steve, I like the model and the details but it looks like a little model the way you presented it. The other thing that doesn't work for me is the tail being between his legs.( what a dog does when he is scared and I can't believe for one minute this dude would be scared of anything!)

All this time working on it I would think you'd have this guy making a scene!

Super work and raises the bar for the rest of us mere mortals....

p.s. the texture on the wood doesn't look right....just kidding...:D

Same here. I think that it's because of the lower resolution/size of the image, which causes a loss in detail. Madmouse, could you post a file that's a little more substantial?

2much4u, there is a link in that thread to a larger image. I still think it is about pose and lighting (and proportion a bit) for me, but Steve is a professional guy and will undoubtedly take all the comments constructively...:D

This is awesome. You are one of the few people I have on watch at renderosity. I was real happy to see this when I received my notice from renderosity about it. I like that it looks like a toy, it is very original.

that's superb work! I just hope the pepole at cg forum don't reject it! I think you turn into the hulk or something. Maybe you should extend the base off the page so thay can't use the 'it's floating in space' argument.

Only thing I can see is that the head of your devil appears to be glued on. I think the head is the correct size given the severed head in the hands, but the body is then too small in proportion to the devil head and everything else.

Interesting juxtaposition... The Lord of the Underworld reduced to a knick-knack on a shelf!
I'm not entirely positive the point of view does those freaky legs justice though.
I'd also agree about the 'tail between the legs'... although I'm not sure I'd want to have to be the one to reposition it. If it were more in either an 'alpha-dog' position or positioned like the stinger on a wasp it might not look so ambivalent.
Beautiful texturing as usual.
I hope ol' Mr. "End of Story" chokes on his High Horse Brand cookie a little when he spies it.

Quite...creepy.

First off, and overall the texturing is beautiful. Nice job.

Some very interesting responses, too. :)

I was expecting the other head to belong to the demon, it looked like it would have gone well with the wings and whatnot. But this one's nice too.

I love the detail on the blade. Nice touch.

A bit on the "Franklin Mint" side...but that might not be such a bad idea if you could get them to sculpt it - they've got a demon guy now, and a dragon guy too. I went with the $10-special John Wayne, myself - the "bank" one with the open safe - doesn't quite exactly match the picture, but I still like it. ;)

One hell of a pile of blood an' bones if you ask me! Nice work.

Nice thing is that I just happened to watch a television program on Noah's ark and the rainbow, at the same time!

What has that to do with tS? I don't know :) but I rejoiced ! Just wanna share the joy :)

Hey Steve - congrats on reaching a completion - stunning work my friend! Awesome modelling and texture work 10 out of 10 - the presentation however? I think it lets down the great work you've done - sorry to say.

It may be corny and somewhat hackneyed but this guy is crying out for a full-on goth presentation. Fire and brimstone is the order of the day.

As you know I'm a great fan of bucking convention but in this case I'm going to agree with everyone else - head looks too big in proportion to torso, tail too submissive, pose obscures those great leg details.

The title? Sheer brilliance - gave me an excellent chuckle.

Oh yeah, final point, the mesh on the wings is a cool idea but sort of looks cheap compared to everything else - like a nice die-casr metal toy with tacky rubber details.

PS - Oh yeah - I also have to add that the idea on one mech arm and one biological arm is pure genius! ;)

If you plan on doing any more "demons" in the near future, keep this advice in mind: no sloping shoulders! You can't be an ominous presence when you've got sloping shoulders, no matter what anybody says. You might as well give him glasses with tape down the middle and a bad case of asthma if your going to give him sloping shoulders!

To quote the legendary British comedian, Kenneth Williams....

'Infamy, Infamy, they've all got it in for me!':) ;)

Well I did sit down with the intention of trying to answer the criticisms that have been leveled at my render. But to be honest I haven't the heart for it :(

Perhaps its a good thing that my next project is to revamp my website, and this will give me a break from polygon pushing for a while ;)

Instead I'll just thank you for the comments:- complementary, constructive or just plain bizard (leif) and push on with my next project.

In the future I think I'll be more reserved with my WIP threads so as not to spoil the finally effect. Although this might prevent people from posting constructive crits about scale and proportion during the modelling stage, at least the end result will be more of a surprise.

Thanks again guys. (i'm now off to search the forum and monthly galleries to find some work that will point me in the right direction for future work)

The trouble with opinions, everyone has one :D

Don't take it to heart, I think everyone was just trying to help you out.

Look at it from my standpoint, people at least offer opinions and support in your WIP's, mine always feel very empty :D

Best of luck in your search for another project...

As I see it Steve, all the comments here were honest, valid and, more importantly, constructive (well, maybe not the hallelujah rainbow one  ). Everyone I know loves your work and I am certainly one of that crowd too but the component parts here did not add up to certain expectations...that is all-nothing else.
To dump this and move on after all this work would be madness..mouse madness. I, for one, would love to see it relit and re-rendered a few different ways to see if any look better than this one but I know how you are about 'regurgitating' stuff ...so I will just wait in anticipation for your next project.

But please, do take these comments for what they are...the general consensus has this (rightly so) as an excellent piece of work but opinions seem divided on pose, lighting etc. nothing to do with modelling or texturing.

Always a fan mate, always a fan...:D

I never wanted it to come to this. I didn't want to see a Mad Mouse in tattered rags, in the alleyway rummaging through the rubbish bin for apple cores and fish bones. :(

I must've been thrown off by something. Lor...who knows by what?! He's a fine demon! A fine demon! The mayhem he's caused, the tortured souls he's forever damned...the puppies, the kittens, the flowers that have wilted by his very touch! It's unspeakable!

Madmouse I really like this - it gave me a big laugh to see it looking exactly like a 9" plastic toy on a shelf in one of the trendy gift shops near work. The mapping/texture work is perfect for the job. I think some of the critics have missed the point and the irony.

I get it.

Its great.

Its a saver in my folder of tS "Hall of Fame" pics.

Mad, to be honest, you are one of the best and maybe the Best modeler on Truespace comunity.. and nobody cant doubt about that you allways show your skills on each picture comming from you.

Your models are perfects.. The texturing work can be better than your modeling skills..

So i think and is only my personal opinion, this incredible work need more POWER! more PAIN!! BLOOD!! SCREAMINGS.. hey! is a MECHDeavil!!

for example the left hand (Right hand on the screen) needs to press with much more strengh... little things like this..

Maybe another camera angle.. or get another background... FLAMES!! death bodies on the floor... people hanged from the tonge. :p

But again, just try to show other points... ANGER!!! GRRRRRR hehehe :D

Don't let it get you down Steve - everyone has their own ideas of course. If it makes you feel better go and criticise the ... er... hell out of some of my work!:D

One thing that makes your work stand out - apart from the superb modelling and inspirational texturing that is - is that your final presentation can sometimes be surprising and counter to the expectations of us lesser souls. We all enjoyed (if that's the right word ;) ) the evolution of your grubby toilet scene and marvelled over your talant and skill - but none of us foresaw the final picture with the sweating can!

Final comment - go and read Splinters' most recent post to this thread - he says it better than I could!:D

Not really, I get the irony but it's power is somewhat diminished by the final presentation. For instance, look at the detailing in the separate parts during the WIP...amazing, but you would not get that in any model I have seen.

Really, Steve excelled himself on this one and the final render is half composite of all the excellent components made and half postmodern take on the big bad monster as a little 9" figure. If you take a look at Parva's statue he made (I forget the character from a game) it actually looks like a real statue.

Now I know steve does not do 'photorealism' so that would not be his intention anyway but I kinda feel that, after all the excellent modelling and texturing, this piece was lit to show it all off rather than leave some to the imagination through glimpses of details through shadows etc.

Remember, I have nothing but admiration for Steve's work and just offered suggestions for making the final render look a little more dramatic and expressive...but then again, that is simply how I would work it and we all have very different styles.

Its OK really guys. I'm not ready to slit my wrists just yet :D

It's true that I was a little disappointed that 6 months work was getting a bit of a panning but I've never been one to turn down constructive crits (in fact I always ask for them) and there has been no comment posted that didn't have a valid point (whether I agreed with it or not) so no problem there.

What did annoy me a bit was that a lot of the 'negative' comments were about the proportions of the model yet (if I remember correctly) no one made comments of this type during the 6 month WIP other than prodigy who mentioned the head size and I defended my thoughts at the time.

It was always my intention to present the devil mech on a base. It was inspired by some work I saw on CG society (so it must be good:rolleyes: ;) :D ) and some seem to like it, some don't, it's all down to a matter of personal taste. I never really do scenes, If your familiar with my work and cast your mind back the last 'scenes' that I have done were one with the warehouse mech and the siege beast. Both quite a while ago and both IMHO not my best work. Even the toilet render could not really be described as a scene.

So basically guys, there's no need to boost my flagging ego :D if I am indeed...

...one of the best and maybe the Best modeler on Truespace comunity..

(And that's very kind of you Augusto, thank you very much :o )

...then I could do with slapping down every now and again:D
