Here's something I created for a friend of mine who runs the Secret World Chronicle (http://www.secretworldchronicle.com), a radio-play style audio drama w/ space nazis, ex-Communist superheroes, and the son of Nikola Tesla running a secret world-saving organization.

Lineart:

Color:

Why am I posting this here? Because while the character in the image (Red Savior, leader of the ex-Communist heroes) was drawn & inked in Manga Studio (http://www.e-frontier.com/go/products/mangastudio), the background - all of it, the smoke (trueParticles), debris (Placer Pro & trueParticles), buildings, etc. - were ALL created in trueSpace, then rendered out as lineart in Lightworks using U/V Toon Shader Beta (http://tsx.uvworx.com/toon.html). Coloring was done in Photoshop.

Hopefully one of these days someone will write/port a more full-featured toon/lineart shader (something like FinalRender's FinalToon (http://www.finalrender.com/products/products.php?UD=10-7888-35-788&PID=37) would be AWESOME), allowing more complex line styles, but as you can see, it's still possible to pull it off even w/ an ancient, and beta, shader.

If you want to see a larger version of the illustration, head over to the Secret World Chronicle (http://www.secretworldchronicle.com) Web site and check out the Red Savior Gallery, where other artists have also provided their interpretations of the character (including a pretty kick ass 3D version, though I believe that was done in MAX).

You don't HAVE to use 3D software to create things that look realistic or like 3D...which is one of the reasons it's such a useful tool to have in your arsenal, especially when the software is as easy to use (for stills, at least...still not 100% convinced on the animation front, though 7.5x is a LOT better than previous releases for animation, but still needs some productivity enhancements) as trueSpace.

that art is SSIIIIICCCKKK!!!! I would have never guessed that it was done in 3d.

I need to find a renderer like that for 6.5 ... anyone??? I have the Toon shader but I can't figure out how to get it to look like the art above. EDIT --- sorry - just re-read and you used a shader that is compatible with 6.5 ... guess I need to play with it more!

Auragreg, when I get home today I'll post the settings I used to get the lines to render out like that, and while I'm at it I'll post a screenshot of the background in 3D as well.

The pic below is something I did a few years ago, using the same methods...in this case, the rocketship, exhaust trail, and explosion in the background are 3D, as well as the gun the girl is holding. Too bad I never got around to finishing the colors.

And here's a quick animation of the gun firing:
