The rendered pictures speak for themselves. Notice difference in light and shadows.

First of each is rendered via trueSpace 6.6 virtuaout plugin, second of each is rendered using trueSpace 7.6 VirtuaLight.

The scenes used are example scenes that is included with the virtuaout plugin.

EDIT: This is a bug that has nothing to do with virtualight:

Loading objects made with tS 6.6 into tS 7.6 with WOOD in the material color channel produces plain colored objects. This can be seen in the pictures below.

I think the wood shader has some issues on being exported to other render engines, that seems to be the one that loses its color.

On the other items, I'd start with newly made simply scenes and ensure shadows work. There could be differences in the scenes due to differences in tS6.6 and tS7.6 (trying things like Bridge Off might minimize that). There could be differences in export settings. Going back to newly made simple scenes to test if shadows work at all would be a good test.

As I wrote, this has nothing to do with VirtuaLight. I made a wooden ball in 6.6, saved it as a cob, and loaded it in 7.6. Wood shader gone.

I have tested and tested both in win2k and in XP, and now I'm glad I dont have to render with virtualight.

Many weird things happen when the virtualight renderer is active.

But I found one thing for sure, lights with squared falloff does not work.

Only the wood shader though? I believe there is an issue with one wood shader and one checker shader when rendered using anything but Lightworks.

So that issue may be shader specific more than anything else.

The lighting issues I'd like to test in a fresh built scene, in case the old tS6.6 scene has some issues (in how data is stored and managed which may be different between 6.6 and 7.6). If building a scene from scratch, do shadows work as expected?

Shadows work as expected on the lights I have tested.

But when the light is set to squared falloff, it seems that there is not even any light emitted from the lightsource, much less any shadows.

But I can not (nor do I want to) test extensively since so many strange errors occur with virtualight (panel dissappearing, regedit hack get it back, fatal error while rendering, and other things.)

About the shaders I dont know about other problems because I have not (yet) encountered them.

And yes, I have tested with scenes built from scratch using tS 7.6 :)

I have recreated a scene included with virtuaout 1.3, "vl_cornell.scn".

With trueSpace 7.6 I recreated from scratch every object and their materials, the local light and the camera, exactly resembling the 6.6 scene.

The 7.6 scene is here: 13929.

Once again, let the images speak for themselves.

First, the 6.6 cornell scene, without GI

Then, the 7.6 cornell scene, without GI

This is the 6.6 cornell scene with GI

Resolved.

I managed to capture the binary virtuaout output file (vlx.vib).

When rendering with VirtuaLight, the program first exports the scene. Two files are created that is passed on to the VirtuaLight executable.

The files are created in the temp folder, and is automatically deleted when VirtuaLight is finished rendering the image. The files have endings .vs and .vib.

.vs is the material declarations.

.vib is the binary scene description.

A GUI is included with the downloadable VirtuaLight freeware render engine (the website (http://www.3dvirtualight.com/) is offline - that is the same website as is mentioned in page 105 in the Lighting and Rendering section of trueSPace 7.6 manual ).

I used that GUI to render the exported VirtuaLight scene that I quickly captured from my temp folder when trueSpace 7.6 was busy rendering.

Well.

It turns out that THOSE images are rendered correctly.

Look here:

Cornell scene made with trueSpace 7.6 rendered without GI (correctly):

13962

Cornell scene made with trueSpace 7.6 rendered with GI (correctly):

13961

My conclusion is that trueSpace 7.6 spawns the virtualight executable with wrong and/or incorrect command line options and run-time variables.

Id like a response as to whether or not Caligari perceive that the 7.6 VirtuaLight renders are erratic.

Nothing to comment on at the moment, you have documented the situation, the cause and solution are not yet known :)

I think light's intensity not enough to light the scene. Please try with change LocalLight of above scene "Intensity". It must solve this problem. :)

There're must be some different light parameters value convertion between virtuaout and virtualight.

HTH!

<edit>Please try with change falloff distance or change square falloff to linear fall off.

At first it seemed like that to me, too. But the light intensity is not the issue.

As I previously posted, the 7.6 cornell scene is rendered correctly with my offline VirtuaLight renderer, with its current light intensity setting.

I think you hit that nail right on it's head.

Vlight.exe has been modified by Caligari to integrate it into trueSpace.

The latest official version is 1.4.0 (just see the "changes" document in "trueSpace76\tS\VirtuaLight" folder).

I have now tested it by running the 1.4.3 executable with the GUI, and have found your conclusion to be true!

Edit: The version I use (with the GUI) is 1.4.0. I got it from 3dvirtualight.com some years ago when that website was still online.

not sure, because tS7.6's VirtuaLight materials editor render well.

That's because material editor scene doesn't use any corrupt features afaik.

Ask, and it shall be given you: 14197

Edit:

Here is the same 14198 but it is exported as a text file, that can be edited in a text editor. This export option that was removed for trueSpace 7 ... (along with some other nice features).

Leif, is VLight.exe version 1.4.0 also can render file inside Cornell_66_GI_ascii.zip?

Can you attach file VLight.exe (version 1.4.0) (EXE file only in zip file)? I'll take a look if I can make tS7.6 can render VL using old 1.4.0 version. ;)

The Vlight 1.4 package should be available for download somewhere. I will not upload that package here though.

You can use web.archive.org to look up www.3dvirtualight.com, and navigate there to download the VirtuaLight1.4Win32.exe package.

Leif, I currently make an unofficial patch of VirtuaLight for tS7.6. Plan to make it available for free for all tS7.6 user. On my tested this VL bug exist since tS7.0 and since I can not found download link for VirtuaLight 4.10 before and you have one, I asked you for only attach file VLight.exe version 1.4.0 in ZIP file here. I not plan to download all package, I only need file VLight.exe because of my internet bandwidht limitation.

Leif, after read you above post, I think why I waste my time for make a patch for people that dont want to help me with only upload a small file to me??? :(

So I think I must not make the patch available for free. People should pay for get it. But I think again bad me, why only because one Leif dont want to give a help, other tS7.6 user can not get the patch for free?

So I thinking of ask for you again if you glad to attach file VLight.exe version 1.4.0 on ZIP file for me for make the patch available for free for all user. I will back again tomorrow after 24 hours, and if I dont see any zip file with VLight.exe version 1.4.0 on it, I'll retry again for find the file on internet and the patch not available for free. People must pay for it. :D

Anyone alse interesting of help with attach file VLight.exe (version 1.4.0) in zip file for make the patch available for free for all tS7.6 user?

Okay, here the 24 hours challenge. I will back again after 24 hour, if I not see the wish attached file, I'll post "TIME OUT" message and it's already too late. :D

PS: I already have VRay 1.53, and I only want to help to fix VL for other tS7.6 user.
