Ok, bought and installed but a few questions.

1. Does it not support volumetrics?

2. I started the 3delight background server (I am in Vista) but I still get the watermark. Any idea why?

Just loading up scenes so no doubt many more questions...:D

I know I'm new, but did I miss something? What's Dribble? Is it a great new tool?! Or some 3D term I still need to learn about? :D

Splinters must be on a lay a way plan because I didn't get a link either. "Sale is Pending" weird EBay never does that. So far only
Splinters got the download?

No layaway for me guys, I paid cold hard err..paypal for this and installed it. Just realised why I got a watermark; I installed 3delight and registered but I have not had an email with the license code yet so I guess I will have to chase that up.

Hope to play with this tonight...:D

Many more questions I am sure. Like the way it bucket renders like Vray.

Ok, for those curious about this it is reminding me very much of Virtualight (which I don't really like that much) and Vray (which I do) in as much as you cannot load up a scene and expect it to render the same but with spiffy new effects.

That is all I had time to do last night and the results were not too impressive but that is probably because they have to be tweaked for the render engine.

Is it possible for Simon or anyone who 'masters' this to give everyone a few tips on setting up scenes to use the engine better?

Bummer. No go for me.

Says tsx load error.

Must be an issue with 64 bit operating systems. Since Emmanuel mentioned something similar.... :(

lol, I managed to miss this thread. Everything has been addressed already (the delay for the download link, the plugin not loading) except I should probably answer:

Does it not support volumetrics?

No, not right now. I was unable to come up with a decent mapping between the Lightworks shaders and RenderMan shaders, so I didn't want to ship with something so unintuitive. RenderMan does support real volumetric effects though, here's an example:

http://www.smartcg.com/tech/cg/books/RfB/download/contents/Ch08_Shading/Fig_8.1/Fig_8.1.jpg

It's just a matter of time until I come up with an equivalent.

Thanks for the info Simon.

I now have a very strange shrinking hairpiece problem for you. Look at any image from the Little Cloud range of WIP's. The boy has a blonde hair 'piece' but when I render with dribble, his hair shrinks to something looking like a comedy wig on top of his head. No probs with LW or Vray and I can't even show you a grab (why oh why are my uploads limited?).

It is a simply poly object with SDS, just like the head which is not affected...

Still, dribble is pretty damn quick...I look forward to it's future...:D

It's definitely SDS-related, it's a matter of figuring out whether it's a bug or a fea-uh, limitation ;)

I think I'll definitely add a UI toggle for "automatically convert SDS to polygons" though, as while there are several advantages of rendering them directly, polygons are so much more predictable (and it's going to give you the same results as Lightworks/V-Ray)

I think that's a good idea Simon.

Do you know how the UVs get changed when for SDS objects? Headus has a mode for mapping SDS objects... I wonder if that would be the same....

Any idea if you can have 3delight running on two machines, at different times?

I really want to mess with dribble on my laptop but I registered 3delight to my desktop machine. If I re-register with the hostid from my laptop will it make my existing one invalid?

Anyone tried this or know for sure?

Hesitant to answer as I don't know for sure. Hopefully their license overhaul will make it easier to use floating licenses.

I'd like to try and work with the 3Delight guys and Scott Iverson (AIR) to try and get a licensing deal for trueSpace users, but I think we'll need to show them bigger numbers to make it worth it. You know what to do :)

There are definitely problems with dribble - no GI effects (bounces, caustics and colour bleeding) and no translucency here - I am sure this is to do with the newer version of 3Delight. It would be nice for all of this to be fixed and even nicer to have some dribble specific shaders...

And yes I do have raytracing enabled - but none of the GI settings have any effect at all.

I'm unsure what newer version of 3Delight you have, the publically available version is still 6.5.0?

So far there hasn't been a verifiable problem with the GI as long as the required settings were in place - raytracing enabled, materials with some luminance/ambient, at least one "real" light (e.g. spotlight) if you want caustics - but I'll continue to investigate. I'll also be making some examples available once I'm done with the first update.

One thing though: "dribble-specific shaders" is (at this stage) contrary to the stated goal of keeping things as simple as possible and without requiring every object to be re-surfaced. Some custom shaders ARE coming for special features such as SSS and fur, but I really want to keep custom shaders as few as possible for the basic version of dribble.

if 3delight would at least give a 4process license instead of just a 2process license I would be more interested :D

but with the current free 2process version it's not useful with a quadcore.

There was some debate that 2 processes didn't necessarily limit you to 2 threads... if each process spawns multiple threads... lol has anyone actually tried it on a quad core machine?

I know a workaround for this problem parva.

I will lend you my dualcore if you lend me you quadcore. :D

The license server says that only A machine can run 2 processes.

If I render it says that it can find only 2 from 4 licenses (a bit confusing, thought I have just one license with 2 processes?!).

Nevermind, I don't get full cpu load with a quad core and 3delight.

Parva,

Since I am probably close to buying a quad rather than dual core, this 3Delight limitation has brought me up short.

A point of clarification:

Does 3D delight run on only 2 of the processors (effectively making the quad core perform like a dual core) or is it actually worse than that, does it stop you using the renderer because it detects more than 2 cores?

I could live with it running like a dual core, but obviously not if it doesn't really work with a Quad core at all...and having just bought SiW dribble..

(-OK budget of new computer cf. dribble there is not really any economic issue here:o)

Thanks,

CdeB

It run on 2 of the processors (50% cpu load) but no problem to use 3delight with a quad system just that you don't get the "full power" with one free license (would have to buy more).

Thanks, parva now it is crystal clear

...so I will still go ahead with the quad core (if my wife gets the money she was promised!) and hope that 3Delight will move the goal posts in the future to accommodate single workstations with multiple cores. I guess after all, what they are trying to stop is production level renderfarms...

You guys seem knowledgable. Any idea if you can register to use on two machines; a desktop (dual core) and a laptop (single core)? Only one would ever be used at a time...

Sorry, I don't know how to setup a network render with 3delight but guess that all licenses must be installed from your host pc.

With the free license you get 2 processes and if you already run it on a dual core, I doubt that there is a way to add a single core pc.

First if you have more licenses and support for more processes you can run on x-pc's ... but again, I have no clue :D

Their site says "All licenses are floating" and that would imply that if your laptop and host were on the same network you could use either PC to run the app but not at the same time. Unless they were rendering the same work like a rendering farm.
