Objective, to model a chair in under 2 hours, type of chair is left up to you.
OK so here are the rules.
1. Create the model in the specified time.
2, You may enter as many times as you like.
3, Your entry should include a wireframe screen grap before subdivision has been applied, mainly this is so people can get an idea of how things were created and perhaps learn a few things.
4. Include time spent, Truespace version, Render Engine.
5. Post only one image per entry which must be no larger than 800x600 pixels. Final composition is up to you and can include as many copies of the object as you wish.
6. Render time, lighting and texturing are not included as people with slower computers may be at a disadvantage.
Time limit - 120 minutes
Deadline - 12.00 AM G.M.T. Tuesday 31st of October 2006
Subject - Chair
Cheers,
Dave |

Daybe, I started the chair and noticed you had the same idea (somewhat). I wanted a Jetsons look.
Edit: The bottom ring is being held in place by an electrical magnetic field. Of course you become sterile using this chair... |

LOL, would've never though to do barstool style chairs.
Here's my more traditional chair:

You guys have given me an idea for my second attempt though...

Thanks Brian,
You knocked your frist attempt out really fast. Heck it takes me that long just to get set up to start working. ;-) I still haven't figured out how to do that kind of "wet" looking gloss like you did either.
In the image of the chairs I posted they are supposed to have a touch of modern styling to them. That's why I chose to do the knitted fabric pulled tight directly over the wood instead of giving them cushions. I'm hoping that it would add to the look to give them a bit of freshness. The big pain was that tS kept mutilating my UVs when I sub divided so in the end, I ended up planar mapping the fabric and cube mapping the chair. There's no wood texture it's all faked with bumps and gloss reflections.

Isn't exactly a normal chair and i'm not sure how comfortable it will be. |

That's not a bad idea, letting the winner choose the next topic, not sure how or who will choose the winner perhaps we could have poll or something. |

LOL Stienie! Wow you guys are sure creative with this stuff! It's really inspiring to see!
I especially like Matski's stylized scupture chair.
Heh, my second entry's gonna seem soooo mundane next to this stuff. :(
Guess I'd better get started on it so I can sculpt something wild for the 3rd one.
@ Brian

Ah so you get texture color speculars instead the usual white ones. Cool idea. :)

I the idea of being able to vote top 3. Not sure how you'd implement that as a poll though. Maybe multiple choice, vote 3?
If we have a tie or more than 10 entries, we could do run-offs.

I'll go against the grain here. Is there a need for anyone to win? My reward is seeing how everyone approaches the project and their technique compared to my own. Just the fact I am modeling (loose term in my work) makes me better. I really don't understand how other sites handle these challenges but we should just let Daybe decide. Of course we can offer ideas as we go.
Also are we suppose to critique others as they post?
How long does each challenge last?
If there is judging I'm not quite sure how you'll do it but I agree the winner should pick the next challenge.
At some point maybe have an idea for a scene too which everyone can create in their own style.
By the way very creative works so far everyone.
E-Graffiti: Nice modeling job but I want to offer two comments.
1) The straps should be thicker
2) You need a wire running to a Hamster in his wheel... |

nothing wrong with a friendly competition, the only thing you would win is the ability to choose the next model, this means that the event is more sociable and everyone gets a chance to be a leading part in it. As far as a scene goes maybe a lighting and rendering challenge like the ones in CGtalk forums, whereby someone makes a small scene and its then the challenge to light it and render it as best as they can |

Oh sure, let me pick the winner ;) , I think the winner of each challenge should pick the winner for the next challenge. Now because this is a modeling challenge, I think this should be judged solely on the model presented and not the final output of course.
I was thinking about some other challenges as well, like lighting, texturing etc. |

I prefer the idea of a poll... just put down the rule that you can't vote for yourself :) Otherwise that'd mean that you can't win twice in a row. |

Yeah, I realize the image needs more work but I did not want to run out of time and I figured people got the point. Regarding your comment #2, I did consider adding more to the image but I am not sure if that goes beyond the scope of focusing on just what was speed modeled so I did not add much else to the scene. But that leads to a question for future reference:
How much can you add in addition to the main model in a speed model challenge? |
