Ok here is my completed image. I posed the real card on a table and tried to get it as close to that as I could. I will post my posing image as well. The light source is a dinning room light with 3 bulbs. They are positioned 37 inches away just like the real ones. It does not look just like, but at my skill leve this is as close as I could get. |

This is really great work RJeff, almost photo realistic. Hey, it's actually better than your photo. ;)
Before you call it finished you may want to tweak the metal material on clip on the back of the card. |

I'd also suggest a small tweak of the lighting - you could do with a small fill light off to the left to weaken shadows on this side - could be a low intensity infinite light pointing back atthe card or a local light. Would also be good to soften the main lighting from above slightly to reduce the intensity of the shadow under the card - if you look at your photo you'll see this shadow is softer than in your render. Two easy options - one is to stick a low intensity local light under the card, but this could produce strange highlight if you're not careful. An alternative is to duplicate your three 'dining room' lights and set the duplicate set to not cast shadows. Reduce the intensity of both sets so that the total intensity of the 2 sets combined matches your previous intensity. (e.g. if they were previously at an intensity of 1, you could put each set at in intensity of 0.5). By playing with intensity of the 2 sets you can vary the shadow darkness quite easily.
Of course, you could start playing with IBLs and the like, but I think with a couple of easy tweaks it could look great.
Really nice job.
NB - if you win (again!) you probably ought to pick a festive theme for December... ;) |

Very nice work. It is better than the real thing! I like your last render but agree with Nez on the lights and shadows. If it is rendered with Lightworks you can set the shadows of your lights to Map instead of Ray, that will also soften the shadows. Increasing the number of lights (light array) is also helpful. You have to realize that your three lamps above the table also indirectly give light through bouncing to the ceiling and walls and you have to mimic that in Ts.

Ok mabey you guys can help me out. I can't seem to get the top heat sink metal to shine like the real thing does. I have tried different shaders and I just can't seem to replicate it. How do you more experienced artist do it?.. |

Set your color to a shade of gray or blue gray. Right click on the reflectance channel in the Model side ME select the Caligari Metal enhanced. Click the red down arrow above the reflectance channel to expand the shader to show options and up the reflection (rfl) value a bit.
Keep in mind that shiny things look shiny because they are reflecting something. You may need to add a skybox with room textures on it to give the metal something to reflect. This is where HDRI is a big help because it's great for faking this. ;) |

Oh got it...but ya know to me the gold does look dull.. I do have to walls one white one red to try and give something for the metal to reflect off of. |

You could take photos of your walls and put them on the planes. ;) It doesn't have to be perfect since it's only going to show in the reflection. |

Ok this is gonna be my final render. Thanks for the advice guys. I do think what I did helped it out alot. I can't seem to get my materials to look right now matter what I do, and I can't get rid of that hard shadow no matter what I do. So the way I see it I have me some things to work on, materials and lighthing. So I hope everybody likes it because I do have some stiff comp..but hey that can only make me better. |

Ok so I have been tinkering with the card since my "final render" and I think I have made some progress. I adjusted the main board some. I wanted it more blue so I decreased the lum and dif settings. Same with the silver capicators..I guess that is what they are. I also changed the table wood to a darker wood for better contrast. Lastly I added a ibl with low light to soften the shadows abit. |

I too like that one Ambrose. The only issue is that top metal plate looks abit off. I am going to do another "final" render before the deadline and try to recreate that scene with my new settings. |

Keep this up rjeff and I might have to vote for you again in the MMC. :D
Excellent work, stop perfecting it and give my puny power supply a chance. :D |
