I had a long post all typed out but lost the damned thing when the forums decided to log me off.

Anyways lighting is the key issue with this image it's the lack of surface detail on the foreground ships and the station itself that fail the overall set-up. The foreground ships totally look like they suffer from poor polygon distrubtion because the large surfaces shouldn't have a fauceted look at 70k nor even 10k. The station suffers from a lack of light catchers(simple bevels to corners) and surface activity.

All in IMO, of course if you don't believe me this was done in ts 6.6 ( http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v648/chrono2005/ZenPicketupdate030805FrontFINISHED.jpg ) and is currently 1.2+ million untextured faces and renders in under 10 minutes with a 3 light set-up.

Warning! thread temporaily veering OT
I recall watching that movie on people thinking that the moon landing was fake...
I love when this question comes up.

Great, I'm being reprimanded for defending my theory of lighting on my own Image thread...

Actually, I think the site more or less agrees with your theory though they also get into a kind of reflection that's neither specular nor diffuse. I'd have never guessed that one either. Still, I'm sure you're right about reflection and radiosity up there. :)

Sorry if we took it too far off topic Magnatude. Guess I was just trying to give a suggestion of how to increase depth in the image via subtle but creative lighting. The sun is a point source whereas a planet or moon can serve as an area light, thus giving a soft lighting effect in the shadows.

LoL...

Actually you all helped me a lot in this thread and I'll likely do some wips on my next set of renders and get some input on lighting.

The thing is, the genre that this is designed from is purely "Anime Space Fantasy". Thats the cartoon-population with Big anime eyes and distorted features. There will be dense gaseous nebula, and in some cases the ability to walk into breathable "space" without a spacesuit... and there will be smoke and fire spewing out of the damaged ships (forewarning the sci-realists out there) even tho its impossible to happen in space.

Once I get the animation done (the reason behind my low polys, because I have to render this stuff on my lowly single computer) and a finished sequence is complete I'll post it. It will be in a flash movie format and layed out in comic-book panels that animate with the action... purely for the Internet.

Actually when did Flash for the internet automatically mean low poly art? And fire in space is possible anyways, it just requires specific conditions.

ANYWAYS... lets see some updates soon!

No reprimand was intended.
Sorry if it came across that way.
The link was offered more as a validation of your lighting theory.
Besides, Bad Astronomy (http://www.badastronomy.com) is just such a fun site.
No thread poaching was expressed or implied.
Carry on!

MAybee its a combination effect of there being no sound in outerspace.

I've looked at this image several times now - I still like, I agree that it's a new milestone for you and I like the soft lighting.... except that it appears to be spaceships in space and you don't get soft lighting in space - there is no atmosphere to soften the light.

Just a thought but you might try rerendering with a 'harder' light set up. Or not. It's great as it is!
