A. Its easy to sleep with the light on.:D :D :D

This is my first project completed entirely with TS7. It was inspired by the excellent work of artist Andre Kutscherauer (http://www.ak3d.de/), as seen on the Cover of the July edition of 3D World magazine. I really liked the clean crisp simplistic look of Andre's render combined with the comical twist so I thought 'lets see if I can get close in TS7' what do you think? It was also a good excuse to get familiar with HDRI. (Me likely V much!!)

The image was rendered in two halves. To get the shadows as smooth as I wanted I needed high samples and low noise but because just about all of the main characters have highly reflective surfaces this made the render times really painful so they were rendered with a different sample rate and composited in afterwards. Glows and flares were added post production but the DOF was part of the original render (and this is the first time I've been happy with my DOF results!)

Comments and Crits are welcome as always.

Awesome job Steve. This is one of the best things I seen done with Truespace, or any 3d software for that matter. No critiques from me. Thanks for the link as well to Andre's site.

Cheers,

Bloody brilliant...and I don't often swear. This stuff really needs posting elsewhere to raise awareness of what TS7 can do...great stuff mate and very close to that 3D world cover which I also think is fantastic...:D

Did you get it into this month's gallery?

I wouldn't dare critique this one, it's that good! Started my day off right.

p.s.

I see so many comical referances in this one. The male light standing outside a busy mens room door with the electrical wires even MORE frayed!

Very well done.

Brilliant, fabulous, love it!

No point me submitting an image this month then!

I'm really interested in how you composited this one. Any chance of a brief tutorial?

Chris

LOL! That's BRILLIANT! So first you made your famous big mech - so did you make the little mechs just for some light relief?!

I'm very impressed Steve. The textures, particularly on the grubby little male are superb. If you raise the bar much higher us ordinary folk won't be able to see it!

Very sweet work.

Steve,
Did you use HDRI in Lightworks or Vray ? Also did you use UVMapper Pro in this one? The texturing was subtle and perfectly done.

At last. Something that takes the wind out of me.

It's been a LONG time that tS render has made me stop. Stare. Smile.

This one does it with bags to spare. I see a few details that I wouldn't have let slip though, but I'm like that.. sorry.

All in all, a "renderization" to stand up and shout about, Roman. You better be using this one on box art or promotion work. This is as good as it gets, this is stuff that will sell tS !

Respect.

Absolutely brilliant! I wouldn't say jelousy would be the correct word, admire would probably be better, well done!

Fancy submitting a larger render ;)

Wow ! I have to say that I like this even more than the 3Dworld version, because I'm partial to the grubby look.

It's perfect !

I don't like to be the first to say but.......but the scale of the stripes on that insulation tape is too small. And the cable should be a bit thicker where it's been repaired. But apart from that, mostly excellent in every aspect. The amount of replies validates that. The image really brings a fresh wind into the gallery forum.

WOW!!! I guess you guys like this one eh? :o :o :D

Thank you all for the kind comments, I'm very flatter and humbled by some of your posts. To me a response like this to one of my pieces is more satisfying than a win in the monthlys (but that's always nice to;) )

Chris Its really nothing clever. The two images at the bottom of this post show the two renders. The one on the left is obviously the background which was rendered at 2304x1728 with 300 samples and 0.6 noise (ray shadows) so that I could get really smooth shadows. The two bulb people were in this render but painted with a constant shader the same colour as the back ground so that they still cast shadows but didn't effect the render time. The second render was the same size but with mapped shadows, 50 samples and no noise everything else was removed which made the render faster and also remove some ugly reflection in the bulbs (not strictly accurate but effective). My original plan was to composite the two renders using a mask but when I was experimenting in PSP I found that by layering the images using Overlay they blended very nicely. So it was just a few touch ups here and there and a bit of post work and she finished.

HTH Chris

Did you use HDRI in Lightworks or Vray ? Also did you use UVMapper Pro in this one? The texturing was subtle and perfectly done. Lightworks, I'm not very familiar with V-ray yet, that's the next project ;) Yes UV mapper Pro and Ultimate unwrapper 3D, I've taken to using them both together as each has features that I prefer for different jobs.

I see a few details that I wouldn't have let slip though, but I'm like that.. sorry. Don't be sorry trebs that's the whole point of this forum IMHO. What were the 'few details' ????

I really like the url on the second cable. Nice touch!I didn't think anyone had spotted that :D Nobody try the site yet coz its not up and running yet. that's my new site the old one www.madmousedesign.com (http://www.madmousedesign.com) is destined for the scrap yard.

I don't like to be the first to say but.......but the scale of the stripes on that insulation tape is too small. And the cable should be a bit thicker where it's been repaired. Hmmmm cant say as I agree with you on the stripes its meant to be earth tape which is yellow and green stripes in the UK (not sure about anywhere else) so maybe that's what your seeing. As for the thickness of the repair, your very right but the tape was added as an after thought. The original texture was going to be a braided cloth but it didn't look right so I went for the current one and was to lazy to thicken up the mesh. MY BAD ;)

Phew I think that covers everything ;)

Thanks again guys

My main one was the insulating tape, bit thicker and an "end" of tape hanging off a bit.

Another one, pointed out by an expert in the matters and one I agree with, she-bulb's left hand. It Might have been better posed slightly higher and on her hip area rather than thigh.

Regards,

Trebs.

Hi trebs, both good points. I think I covered the main one in my post above. But the end of the tape hanging off would of been a nice touch. As for the pose. I did try the pose your mentioned but something about it didnt look right. Maybe it was because the arm are a bit longer than human proportions. One of my main faults (and there a quite a few;) ) is once I've finished modeling a scene and started texturing or rendering I loath going back and remodeling stuff. Stupid I know and lazy but thats just me. :D

Thanks for you opinion its all good here :)

I second that! TS is not getting the attention it deserves. Your work and Shike's Beast would get some excitement going again for the trueSpace community. I think Splinters should get something over there and many others here. Of course Parva's work is already turning heads. Who want to go next?
