Naes brings up a good point about the various versions and upgrading.

The one unique marketing method that Caligari has is offering their older software at a reduced price for entry users like myself. :)

Sure, it makes me lick my lips about the new stuff, but I need to learn the basics of 3D modeling before I dive in the complex stuff capable of the higher end/newer programs.

One thing I wish that Caligari could do is beef up their GameSpace program and maybe they have. Haven't really looked at that much. I would think an integrated Flash would brings tons of manga/other type of cartoonists to their front door. With the integrated Flash I would think they would need to add a 2D drawing capability like a Paint/Sketch Program.

Actually a 3D painter would make me bow down at their feet if it was reasonably priced. :)

But if a frog had wings...

Yes, I know my handwriting sucks, but I don't exactly have the world's best tablet either.

Ok, so it's no Zbrush, but tS does have a 3D Paint tool.... which would be a lot more useful if they didn't make it redraw the object every time you hit undo. You might think, "ah, but surely they have to redraw the whole thing so as to remove the bit you just painted & wanted to undo?" but the thing is it removes the bit you want to undo just fine, then does the redraw - which can be a major pain in the arse. :(

tS may not be Zbrush but if we had more images of tS doing 3D painting, there would probably be better response to the program.

As it's been in there since at least 6.0 [2002], possibly even earlier - perhaps they didn't feel it was necessary. <shrug>

That's annoying. Let's hope they make a much better job of it when they get round to re-doing it with the new architecture.

3D Paint would be much cooler if it didn't triangulate the mesh.

Smiles contentedly...

There's nothing like the smell of napalm er fresh shrinkwrap in the morning.

Humms a song, occasionally muttering the word 3D painting...while tapping his toe to the chicken dance song.

Off to make more models and 3D Paint! :)

From a recent e-mail:

"CGarchitect.com in partnership with 3Dworld Magazine, have put together the 2nd architectural visualization industry survey. This survey will help us analyze current market trends that affect the growth of our industry.

This is by far the most encompassing survey ever created for our industry and will be published in the May Architectural Visualization supplement of 3Dworld magazine."

TrueSpace is in the -which 3d app do you use- category. The results might be interesting.

Hi all. Brand spankin' new user here. Just purchased ts 7 the other night. I'll admit, that reading the forums actually had me second guessing whether I should purchase or not, as there seems to be a lot of negative energy surrounding the 7.0 release. My understanding is that there are missing, much needed character tools still among other things, and that I may be expected to pony up for those in a 7.1 and 7.5 release too. That doesn't make me too happy, being a character animator myself, but I'll worry about that later, if I even need to.

I honestly bought the package first and foremost because of the link editing video I saw on the front page. Second reason was the new player window and real time features (being a game animator, I'd love nothing more than to see more real time stuff accessible from my 3d apps). Third reason was for character tools. Seems I may have to wait on the third reason, but it wasn't enough to throw me off from a purchase. I'll explain why, as I think I'm somewhat of an oddball as a new user.

I've worked in games for close to a decade now, and I've also used most of the major and little guy apps out there from modeling to animation. I like to think I've developed a rather unbiased, no bs outlook towards software. Basically, I follow the tools and use the best one for the job as I see fit. I'll buy a piece of software even if I know I might never use it, if only to see if it can offer something useful or new and innovative. That's pretty much why I bought TS 7. I'm curious to see what this version and the character tools update will offer. I may not ever want to use it again once I learn it, but I was willing to take that risk. Then again, maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.

My initial impression of ts so far is that it's a bit quirky compared to the more standardized apps out there. I'm going to be honest and state up front that I dislike the navigation and transform widgets right away. I'll probably use the keyboard shortcuts wherever possible instead. I do like a lot of the drag and drop nature of it though. Not a big fan of all the crazy icons. They are useful for some things but not all. So thank you for providing text based alternatives.

I'm only just diving in but my main focus is going to be on the link editor, and probably the character tools in the near future. I'll be sure and post more good and bad impressions, as I think it can be good to get fresh opinions along with the seasoned users with years of experience with the software. I see a lot that I like initially, which is somewhat surprising for me, coming from that whole cgtalk realm of people using the big commercial apps. I see some things that bug me too but that's to be expected. No software is perfect afterall.

Anyway, back to watching tutorials for me! Just wanted to stop in and introduce myself. Thanks for reading.

Oh and if anyone has some good tutorials for the character tools they'd recommend I'd love to see them. Thanks!

James

Gwot, James, welcome to the world of trueSpace. Enjoy your journey. I am sure you won't be disappointed with the programs potential as a modeller.

I hope the link editor is good to you. Cheers!

I'm just waiting for Autodesk to make an offer to buy out Caligari. That would really blow. Anyway, it's all in the hands of the user. Maya won't make you better than a tS'er if you don't have the smarts. If you lack the skills you might as well go with Simply 3D.:p  Rendering, it aint for everyone.:D
