Have you tried HDRI with this car yet i_maker?

Should look fantastic (even more so..;) )

Thanks, guys.

No, I haven't tried HDRI yet. I want to first read the 900 odd pages manual from page to page before exploring ts7 further. If only I could lock myself up somewhere for a week to learn all about ts7...

Just go to the global environment (hdri) icon from the light toolbar (left of screen). Choose the kitchen image from the HDRI folder in ts\textures. Set intensity to about 1.5, back intensity to about 0.9. Choose 'use environment light only. and deselct option to show background then see how fast it renders. Increase sample size for smoother shadows when you get the lighting right...go on...you know you want to...;)

Nice! The yellow definately makes the car stand out more now.

Oh, before you spend 2 weeks locked in solitary reading the tS7 manual, as Splinters said, render a few with HDRI, it'll really show you what you can do with tS7.

Thanks, Paul, for the tip. I'll probably need more from you before toolong... You make it sound so easy. When I saw the size of the manual, I just about fainted! I am at work now, so I'll have to wait until I get home before I can "play" with my ts7.

That will be one render that I cannot wait to see...;) and it really is that easy

Keep an eye on the render time-I am sure many members would be interested to see how quick it renders with HDRI-especially compared to your TS6 version. Here is what you need-R-Click on the icon for the settings panel and good luck....;)

Omg. i_maker, you rule. :D

Is that car made with subdivision surfaces, or with 'pure' polygons?? Looks stunning!! Could you post a wireframe shot?

But maybe not with the empty_kitchen HDRI hihi...

Render time could actually be pretty quick here and it should look pretty cool too

No need for sarcasm Saul..;) Kitchen HDRI image has nice specular effect where the kitchen window is in the image-great for general day lighting and testing (see my MP3 player in this month's gallery-same HDRI image). Once i_maker has the idea he can find a nice car showroom HDRI or similar. Then again, got to watch your little ironies...;)

Thanks, guys. These images were rendered in ts7 using the "regular" LW rendering engine, ie no HDRI. All my tests using HDRI have so far been disappointing:the HDRI reflections were all in the wrong places or distorted to the point of creating a very unrealistic "paint work" on the car. I will have to do a bit more work/research, etc., before I'll try HDRI again. It is disapointing that ts7 did not ship with more HDRI images. Then again, it should up to the user to create his/her own images!

Overtime, I have created a set of rendering "rigs" for car rendering, with optimised relections/shadows/etc. All I need to do in pop in the car, click on "render" et voilà! I have an image of a car worth making a poster of!

Here is another view of the SRC11 illustrating my point about "reflections" in the right places as far as car rendering is concerned:

Cheers all

Does the HDRI problem explain the weird black windscreen with the transparent streak through it on the first yellow car image?

That "weird black windscreen with the transparent streak through it" is how I intended the image to look. It is not weird to me.

MMM, I cant really criticise your images I_Maker as they are truely brilliant but that streak on the windscreen does look a bit odd compored to the fantastic work on the rest of the car:jumpy:

That's the thing with "reflections", ain't it? Either you like them or you don't. I have certainly seen quite a few photographs of cars in car magazines with objectionable reflections on them (from artistic point of view), it all comes down to how you place the lights in relation to the car. Some people have criticised my renders with white background saying they do not look "real" enough and suggested HDRI would be good for that "photorealistic" look. Well HDRI gives you reflections galore! And this is what I don't like. I am not after a super-photorealistic effect with my car renders, I only want images that I enjoy looking at. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, reflections may or may not be your thing. So be it.

i_maker, I have nothing but respect for your work. I was not criticising your work, I simply presumed that the reflection on the windscreen might have been a result of the HDRI attempts that you were not pleased with.

Still, a beautiful piece of work..:D

Hi imaker,

Very nice indeed! HDRI can be very powerful but I see you are also very demanding on the quality of end product which for you seems outstanding. Anyways here are an assortment of free images you can try to see if they make any difference if you don't have them:

http://www.lightworks-user.com/hdri_starter_collection/

Have you tried or you might want to experiment with decreasing HDRI environmental map panel "Back. intensity" setting? This will lower the reflection or intensity of not only the background but also any reflections associated with the HDRI background even if the HDRI image is not used as a background.

Also the reflections from the HDRI background can be blurred by using using "Sampling angle", even if you are not rendering the background which in many cases it shouldn't be depending on the scene. Hard reflections, not sure how to call it can be made more realistic. Items such as chrome, metals, glass and what not can be enhanced if a background is used for reflections, in TS HDRI can give those reflections an environment to be in while the background doesn't have to be used if not needed.

In any case extremely nice modeling.

Could be nice if there was a map of a car show room which could be used, would give more realism to the image then. ;)

Not that it isn't realistic at the moment.;)

Very nice. Are you open to sharing any details about your light set-ups or are they trade secrets? I don't do cars myself but I'm always intrigued by the techniques that folk come up with to acheive specific goals. What ever your secrets are i_maker they certainly work!

Now, that's really putting me on the spot, W!zard. I will have to politely answer this to your question: no.

Cheers

Don't forget to follow the link to the Lightworks resources page, that has some 20 or so HDRI images there. They were too large for the installation, plus we did not have permission from all companies to distribute them along with a commercial application, but you can easily visit that page and grab all those images free for non-commercial use.

There are also other images out there that are free, so a quick search will turn them up :) Again free images can't be included with commercial applications, so while they are there for you guys and gals to head off and download, we couldn't just drop them into the tS7 install.

HTH!
