I don't do cars myself but I'm always intrigued by the techniques that folk come up with to acheive specific goals.


The key to a good-looking shiny car render is to give it something to reflect. The same goes even for small products. The professionals use soft-boxes or big white reflector cards for this type of stuff.


When I do something similar in tS, I throw in some plains painted white. I don't turn the ambient up but instead I will point a spotlight up at them or use a local light to "brighten" them, which to me looks better in the reflection than an ambient solid-white plain.


Then of course you take special care with the direct lights themselves - intensity, position, color, etc. to get the proper 'dramatic' effect.


Just some ideas. :)

:D Chuckle! An excellent answer! I'm sure that with a bit of dabbling (or a lot of dabbling) I could create a reasonable arrangement of shaders and lightsto create a similar appearance (though I seriously doubt I would have the patience for modelling at the incredibible level of detail you do!).


I guess I really asked because I like to learn from people who clearly know what they are doing - as you do. I fully respect your desire to keep your techniques to yourself and apologise if you felt I'd put you on the spot.


As long as you keep sharing the results of your techniques with us I'm happy!

I have decided to go for a cleaner design of the rear. Here is the latest render. Also tweaked the shader for the windows and windscreen, and the car paint has been "tweaked" also. It's amazing how much there is to learn even with just the standard Lightworks shaders alone! You could write a book about this subject and still would not have exhausted the subject!

You sure don't get tired of tweaking and playing with one scene over months ;) Very brave to post on CG-Channel, the people there normally rip everything apart which is not industry standard :D . Kudos.

Thanks, GraySho. Although I am currently working on a completely new project, I use the old model for experimenting with new renders. I have discovered that some of the LW shaders in ts7 have MORE SETTING LATITUDE than the same ones in ts6.6! This throws everything I have learnt in disarray! I now have to re-learn so much, hence...

Just another test render while working on my other big project. I am using the current car model to build myself a collection of ready-made "render set-ups" so that once the next car is ready for rendering, I just use .cob files with already optimised lighting and camera angles.

Your cars and rendering style is fantastic ! :)

I've been inspired to try to make my own dream car...I've bought a lot of books and magazines on the subject...now I only need some designer-talent ;)


My opinion on HDRI is that it's great for matching a render with a background photo (something I'm currently trying out), but to achieve something even close to the cool studio-look you have would require special studio HDRI-images ( I think I've seen that somewere?)

But I see no reason why you should spend money on that when you already have a method that looks awesome :)

And besides, with a HDRI image you wouldn't be able to adjust where the reflections end up...except for rotating the car. ;)

Thanks, Shike. I too was initially excited by the HDRI buzzword. I thought it was the "holy grail" of car rendering, until I tried it...


Just pick up any car magazine off a news stand: you will see now a lot of car ads with very soft body colours. It looks like the "shiny with reflections coming from God knows where!" look of car photos is now becoming less sought after by car advertisers.

I have received many requests for tips on how to model a car, etc. Modeling a car (I mean properly, unlike in a breakneck “speed modeling” competition) is a many-faceted modeling task. You need to learn to model every single part that goes into the final model. So much so that I believe if you can model a car, you can model anything. The best way to approach car modeling is to start with something simple. So, let’s start with the wheel. We all know how a good set of wheels will make a car look so much better.


Well, I will go one step further than just giving you a few tips, I am giving away this .cob file with which you can make a wheel.

No, it is not a new car. It is the same one that appeared in the Caligallery in March 2007. Here is another close-up view of that same car. Hope you enjoy it.


The car I am currently working on will take truePlace to the extreme in terms of complexity. Not sure yet if it will be able to handle it. Might have to move to another app if it doesn't...

I'm always amazed of the amount of detail you create on your cars and the parts for it... being able to show these great close-ups without loosing realism! :D

I might have the patience to create detail enough to show a car from 200feet...through a very dirty camera lens ;)
